What lies beneath: The Face Plus Medispa, Skin Assessment

The experienced naked eye can sufficiently assess the skins surface.

The trained eye can see the visible signs of aging, pigmentation that may be on the surface, dryness or the oil present on the skin.

Imagine if you could see the deeper layers of the skin? How many lines you have, how many spots you have on the subsurface of your skin and find out exactly how many pores you have! There is a way

Some people may not want to know what lies beneath the skins surface but for those who complete a skin assessment at Face Plus Medispa, Bondi Junction, we will reveal ALL.

Using the VISIA machine, cross-polarised and UV lighting are used to record and measure surface and subsurface skin conditions.

Your VISIA assessment journey:
1. Your skin will first be cleansed thoroughly prior to your skin assessment.

2. Following your cleanse the dermal therapist will then place your face into the VISIA machine.

3. The VISIA machine will measure the level of:
UV Spots, only visible via the VISIA. UV spots occurs when melanin coagulates below the skin surface as a result of sun damage.

Spots, typically brown or red skin lesions including freckles, acne scars, hyper-pigmentation and vascular lesions. Your therapist will be able to advise you of problem areas and cause.

Brown Spots, lesions on the skin such as hyper-pigmentation, freckles, lentigines and melisma. These spot are visible with the naked eye unless they are below the surface. Spots below the surface will appear if expose to the sun and other free radicals.

Red areas represent a number of conditions, such as acne, inflammation, rosacea or spider veins.

Wrinkles, furrows, folds or creases in the skin will be clearly outlined and your dermal therapist will advise the quantity and main area of visible folds.

Texture, primarily measure the smoothness of your skin and will be able to advise the depth of a peel or frequency of exfoliation required.

Pores, surface opening of sweat duct glands. The VISIA will capture the total number of pores.

Porphyrins are bacterial excretions that can become lodged in the pores and lead to acne. This can be difficult to pick up with the naked eye but clearly visible but with the help of the VISIA your therapist will be able to target the area before the acne appears on the surface of the skin.

Two functions that some love, hate or fear are
True skin age, this function will advise the true age of your skin in comparison to other people the same age as you. It is not always entirely accurate as the machine does not take into consideration your background or where you live.

Finally, the Simulation You can also take a peek at what you will look like in years to come. This is great for those who have healthy skin! For those who have a lot of lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and skin damage can be quite confronting.

The VISIA analysis will highlight both the positives and negatives of your skin.
Your dermal therapist will discuss maintenance tips or treatments required to repair your skin.

A skin assessment will always be the first step in your journey to a better you with Face Plus Medispa. Check out all of your treatment options here

Blood sucking: Vampire facials

Plasma contains powerful cell rejuvenating properties which have been used in the medical industry for years.

Made famous by Kim Kardashian, The Vampire Facial, also known as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections.

To experience a PRP treatment all patients must first have blood extracted from the arm. This blood is then placed into a centrifuge where it will spin to separate out the clear, yellow coloured plasma.

There are many benefits of plasma including its ability to initiate growth factors in the skin, leading to a healthier, vibrant, glowing, youthful complexion.

When the plasma is injected back into the treatment area the growth factors are healing damaged cells and acts almost like fertilizer for a plant, you will see it flourish with zero downtime.

The plasma can be injected manually with a needle or via a gun like tool that will precisely inject nine needles into the treatment area at one time. Your Face Plus Medispa, cosmetic nurse will determine which process will provide you with the best results.

Both techniques may also be utilised in your treatment and both treatments options are not painful, some patients experience some discomfort during the manual needling process.

Depending on the area of treatment it can take between 45mins to an hour and for optimum results three treatments one month apart should be considered.

Treatment areas for PRP:
Around the eyes
Cheeks & mid face
Post baby belly

Look the part: Recreate Harley Quinn’s look

Halloween is just a few days away and we have recreated our favourite look!

We also think this is probably one of the most simple costumes to recreate!

How to:
1. You want to use white face paint diluted a little to put as a base, or you can use a really light foundation and dust over some white translucent face powder to set.

2. You can brush through some brow tint through the brows but nothing to perfect as it’s quite a messy look.

3. Using the loose shadows from Curtis collection in colours Midnight Sky (Blue) and Paraga Princess (Pink) blend them on the outer part of the eye and bring it down onto the cheek.

4. Using a dark brown or Black eye pencil line the eyelash line, top and bottom and then smudge, finish with a few coats of mascara.

5. You can use the Jet black liquid eyeliner pen to draw a little love heart on the upper cheekbone underneath the eye.

6. Apply some red lipstick in shade Captivate. You can either leave it neat and tidy or slightly smear it on the lower lip to give the effect.

7. Optional- To give a dirty, messy look that Harley Quinn often has you can dust some dark grey or brown shadow in a few places over the face.

8. Hair in pigtails to complete the look!!!
The outfit, seems pretty easy! We’ll leave that to you!

Don’t have the skills or time to recreate the look? Book in a make up session with Rowena, our in house make up artist:

Bloom: Gut flora

Gut flora is a complex mix of microbes and micro-organisms.

This composition of microbiome can affect many aspects of your health.
When your digestive system is working correctly you will generally feel great. Your gut controls our immune function, stress levels, and digestion.

When the microbiome in our digestive system is malfunctioning, our body will begin to show signs of malfunctioning and potentially throwing your body into chaos. The nervous and immune system will also become impaired if the hormonal function is not correctly operating.

To ensure that your body and digestive tract runs smoothly, it is imperative to maintain a colony of healthy gut flora.

Positive gut flora helps the body absorb nutrients, utilising vitamins and battling infections, protecting our body from disease, carcinogens and also assist in regulating the metabolism.

To maintain a healthy gut flora you must make sure you are eating foods that contain friendly probiotic bacteria. I

ncorporate the following foods into your diet regularly and will create a healthy gut flora:

– Fermented foods

– Kombucha tea

– Sourdough bread

– Mint

– Cinnamon

– Supplements
– Probiotic supplements: check out our Beauty Chef range of supplements here

There are certain foods and activities you should avoid keeping a health balance of good gut bacteria:

– Fatty foods

– If you have an allergy to gluten or dairy, avoid them completely to maintain a healthy functioning of your digestive system

– Stress

Deep absorption: Galvanic infusions

Galvanic allows increased therapeutic benefits of ingredients and their efficacy to be increased also.

Galvanic infusions are a safe treatment that can be added to almost any facial, it’s a great way to provide the skin with a deeper infusion and treat an array of skin concerns.

A galvanic current is a low-level, continuous current that flows in a single direction known as direct current. This direct current stimulates cells, moves tissue fluid and softens blackheads, driving oils and ingredients deep into the epidermis.

Via a switch on the machine either the positive or negative polarity can be used to pull or repel solutions into the skin. This is achieved by creating a circuit through a metal “active” electrode roller being placed on the skin that’s connected to the galvanic machine. An additional “inactive” electrode is held in the hand of the patient on their chest.

This electrode will be covered by a towel to increase to conductivity and ensure the patient is comfortable. These two parts together create a low-voltage loop, so the current flows through the body.

Therefore, minerals and vitamins applied to the skin are pulled into the skin via the positive to negative, as a result and the negative and positive attraction.

Galvanic infusions provided with the positive polarity are referred to as the iontophoresis and it is ideal for treating aging skin and hyperpigmentation. The positive polarity also has a calming and tightening effect on the skin, assisting in the reduction of sensitivity and redness.

Desincrustration is negatively charged and is a process that softens and emulsifies sebum and keratin in the follicle. The Desincrustration process is performed prior to manual extractions, it prepares the skin for a safe, painless and successful removal of comedone and micro-comedones.

A desincrustation alkaline solution is applied to both the skin and the negative electrode held by the patient, causing the alkaline to have the following effects and benefits:
– Skin softening
– Dilates follicles
– Increases sensitivity
“With the galvanic currency the products required are infused at a deeper level.

The infusion prepares and readies the skin for extractions and a deeper exfoliation” Erin Holohan, Dermal Therapist Face Plus Medispa, Bondi Junction.
Galvanic procedures are not recommended for patients with:
– Metal implants or piercings
– Heart conditions
– Epilepsy
– Diabetes
– Clients who are pregnant

Hunger Games: Your summer diet plan

Fad diets are one extra stress you don’t need in your life, eat well with the correct food and keep active.

The gyms and pavements are getting busy around town with people getting their body ready for summer! Despite what trainers say, getting your body summer ready is not easy!

There are a few key rules that you need to follow –

1. Eat more fruit, vegetables and lean meat
You can enjoy all fruit in moderation, blueberries and grapefruit are a wonderful options. Devour leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables  including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussels sprouts.

2. Stop eating dense carbohydrates
We all know we need to avoid these! Sugary drinks, fruit juices, white bread, pastries, sweets, French fries and potato chips.

3. Drink three litres of water a day
Drink a glass of water every two hours. Women should be drinking 11 glasses and men 15 glasses of water a day. If you don’t enjoying drinking plain water you can always add fresh fruit to your water or drink herbal tea.

Want to gain a better understanding of types of water and what to drink? Read more here part one  and part two

4. No alcohol

5. No junk foods or sweets

6. Eat dinner before 7:30pm
Depending on your bed time, it is imperative you eat at least 3 to 4 hours before you go to bed. Lying down too quickly following a meal can lead to heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion. As the metabolism slows down in the evening, your body must work hard to digest the food that was recently eaten.

This can lead to disrupted sleep and leave you feeling lethargic the next morning. Avoid red meat, junk food, processed foods and opt for whole grains, soups, fruit and vegetables.

7. Get at least 7 to 8 hours sleep
Sleep is a period where a lot of important processing, restoration and strengthening occurs.

Unfortunately, you can’t make up for lost sleep. The best thing for your body is a healthy, consistent routine that meets your sleep needs (almost) every night!

8. Workout five days a week
