Brotox: Muscle Relaxants for Men

Men are now becoming conscious about their appearance and this has led to more seeking out “Brotox”.

We know that a lot of men and women have been avoiding muscle relaxants such as Botox and Dysport in fear of not having movement (frozen, expressionless face) or other people being able to tell “they’ve had work done”.

Cosmetic nurses have been successfully treating fine lines, wrinkles and many other concerns related to aging, for years.
“Brotox”, how does it work? It works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle is unable to contract and this makes the wrinkles and lines soften and in many cases, disappear.

The treatment inclusive of a consultation will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes. If you’ve had muscles relaxants with any of our nurses in the past the treatment time will be significantly less.

Immediately following the treatment your treating cosmetic nurse will advise not to rub or touch the injected area for a total of 4 hours, they may also tell you not to lie straight down.

The Botox or any muscle relaxant will generally take 7 to 14 days to kick in.
Another concern that is often brought to our attention is “How long it stay in my body, where does it go after it’s been injected?” Once the connection between the nerve and the muscle where it has been injected is blocked the “Brotox” does not remain in the body, it is cleared out.

Botox stays only where injected, it does not roam through the body but attaches to the muscles where injected. The effects of the treatment will last between 3 to 6 months, we even have patients who only require a yearly treatment.

Many of our male patients often decide to have “Brotox” due to pressures from their partner (I am speaking from experience). Following the treatment men are surprised with the amount of movement they have, yet there are no visible lines and wrinkles.

Another change that they may notice is their mood, muscles relaxants have been shown to lower feelings of depression, anxiety and irritability.

The study did note that patients did not see a significant difference in their appearance, suggesting the boost was not down to a lift in their self-confidence.

Metro: Stop – Start

You don’t have to be one of those “Metro-Sexual” types to take care of your skin and have good skin.

There are simple ways to manage your skin and a large majority of it can all start in the shower. We will guide you through to specific products for your skin type, further down.

Believe it or not the male species also has an organ called skin! It might be a little rougher and tougher but it’s still there and should be taken care of.

As mentioned above, skin is your body’s largest organ and it serves as a protective barrier between your internal organs and the rest of the world! Your skin also helps regulate the body temp and acts as a filter.

When the skin is healthy it is better able to fight the signs of aging, is quicker to heal and blocks off potential diseases better than unhealthy skin.

A properly tailored skin care regime is not just about making the skin look great, it’s about overall health. Poor skin care habits will lead to rashes, sores, acne and wrinkles, making your skin for susceptible to disease and infection.
So, what do you need to stop and start?

STOP just using anything and everything! This could be causing serious long term damage to your skin. STOP doing nothing, soap in the shower doesn’t quite cut it. START taking proper care of your skin.

This means you need to start using:
A cleanser – as you get older you may find that you are developing more blackheads, redness and random breakouts. This is due to not cleaning your skin properly. Cleanse your skin morning and night.

Moisturise – Your skin needs moisture to survive! Try not to use hot water as heat draws the moisture out of your face, opt for warm water. Apply a moisturiser twice daily, morning and night. You don’t need much!

Which of the following sound like your skin?

The no fuss guy: If you have pretty good skin but it’s time to step it up to avoid those fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging these are the products for you, click HERE

The sensitive guy: You often see a bit of redness. Any product you apply seems to irritate the skin? These are the products for you, click HERE

The rough and tough guy: You’ve got strong skin and you’re probably more prone to black heads and dryness. Find out what you should be using HERE

Blade Runner: Proper Shave

Before you shave lets discuss a few things.

The final shave before your wedding day is probably one of the most important shaves you will ever have to complete.

Before we continue, if you have a beard don’t feel the need to shave! Probably not the best time to be trying out a new style.

We do have a little advice for the bearded man, make sure you have some oil and a comb with you on the day, you will be photographed all day.

You want to make sure your beard is in fine form, even if you’re not aware or ready for a photograph to be taken. Read our blog about maintaining your beard HERE

On that note let’s move on to shaving…
If you generally shave and you’re not happy with how your skin appears it’s really important to take care of your skin, it will only get worse with further irritation.

As the ladies have a hair trial, have a trial facial hair trial about 3 weeks before your wedding day. Pop on the full suit and tie and trial a clean-shaven look, a little stubble or a full 5 o’clock shadow.

Take a couple of snaps in daylight and see which look you prefer, looking in the mirror and taking pics are very different so make sure you take some happy snaps outside in daylight.

Take note of how many days it took for the perfect amount of stubble to grow.
It’s often a great idea to make time to have a professional shave. You will want to trial this process also so you can monitor and trial the growth of hair.

If you do opt to shave yourself and you are using a disposable razor, make sure it’s a fresh one each time you perform a trial shave and the final shave, that way you know you will achieve the same result each time. A disposable blade should not be used more than 5 times, at this point the blade will become blunt and cause the skin irritation.

If you generally use the same bar of soap front to back and top to bottom, then we can’t ask too much of you, we know BUT we strongly suggest you book in sometime for the Face Plus Medispa “Groom the Groom” package.

We have allocated two weeks for this program but you are only required to come in once each week. The first week, for your muscle relaxants and the second visit will be for your facial.

Your muscle relaxants don’t give you the frozen look, we promise, see before and after below

We believe that it’s imperative for men to still have movement to ensure they still appear masculine. The muscle relaxant appointment will be approximately 4 weeks out from your wedding day.

The facial appointment should be no more than a week out from your wedding date. Check out the full package HERE

Our day: The Grooms role

Sometimes the importance of a groom’s role in wedding planning can be overlooked.

It is easy to get caught up in catering to the bride’s desires: what is her dress going to look like? Who is in the bridal party?

Brides have often dreamed of their ‘special day’ from a young age, and while this is a wonderful time to make all of their dreams come true, it is just as important to ensure the groom is looked after during this special time as well.

Remember – they have invested their own time, financial contribution and heart into planning and delivering your special proposal – and that is not to be overlooked! It takes courage, commitment and a whole heap of love to deliver this special moment – which deserves celebration in itself.

Here are some top tips to ensure the groom is just as involved and looked after in the lead up to the special day:

Allocate tasks to the groom
It can be super easy for the bride-to-be to get carried away with wedding planning – it is their dream day after all! Before getting too far ahead, sit down with your hubby-to-be and ask him what he envisioned for your special day.

What colours did he imagine the bridesmaids wearing? What kind of music does he want playing? It is easy to assume your significant other doesn’t really care about these sorts of things, but you may be surprised!

By asking him what he envisions, you are allowing him to participate in all of the big decisions – which you can then allocate tasks to. For example, my fiancé is really passionate about photography, so he has been given the task of choosing our photographer.  Give him tasks to focus on that he will enjoy, so he doesn’t feel left out.

Ask his advice
No, you don’t have to show him a picture of your final choice of dress, but before you go looking it may be nice to ask what styles he envisioned you in. How does he like your hair?

What flowers does he like? Remember that look of love you will see at the end of the aisle – you want him to be blown away by how you look, so hearing what he has in mind is always helpful.

Remember the day is for BOTH of you
Does he like cigars or have a penchant for whiskey? While these may not be YOUR thing, remember the day is for you both. If arranging a little special bar of goodies him and his mates will enjoy will make his day that extra bit special, so be it.

Attention is most likely going to be on you for the whole day anyway, so it is important he feel just as special.

Organise some special surprises for him in the lead up to the day
Perhaps you want to thank him for just being an amazing fiancé, or show him how excited you are to be marrying him. Book him in for a massage or facial – something pampering that often gets overlooked for the groom.

Face Plus Medispa offer a range of pampering services for the man in your life – check them out HERE

Allow him to celebrate with his mates
Accept the fact that if you are having a hens, he will most likely have a bucks. Feel free to speak with him and his friends around what you would deem appropriate, and then release control. This is one of the only nights in his life you really don’t have much of a say – so trust all will be okay (you are marrying him after all, so trust is paramount!).

Be sure to have planned your own night out that falls on the same night as the bucks, so you aren’t spending time worrying about what is happening when you’re not there. (Chances are it is tamer than what you imagine!).

If you both get a little carried away, you could both book in for a couples IV treatment following the festivities at the Face Plus Medispa, Drip & Chill area, read more HERE

Take time away from ‘wedding planning’ to be just the two of you
Be sure not to get so caught up in the planning that you miss what makes your relationship special – date nights, nights in cuddling on the couch, and just moments not talking about the wedding are all so important.

What are ways you looked after your groom in the lead up to the big day?

The Walk: Isle Ready

A few weeks leading up to the wedding is not the time to make any drastic changes.

At Face Plus Medispa, we believe that all treatments should be completed in stages, read our “Bridal Ready: What and when” blog HERE

If you have followed the timeline shared in our “Bridal Ready: What and when” you will know that in the four to three weeks leading up to the big day we highly recommend you take advantage of our “Isle Ready” package (if you have not already started one of our 6 or 3 month plans).

The “Isle Ready” package includes eight LED Light treatments and one Oxygen Glow or Collagen Facial with additional LED light add on.

The “Isle Ready” package was of course, specifically designed with the bride’s time constraints in mind. Taking just 20 to 30 minutes per treatment, it is a treatment suitable for all, including those with generally healthy skin to anyone suffering from a breakout.

Not to mentioned the 20-minute power nap that can be achieved during this treatment! Available across all Face Plus Medispa clinics the LED light therapy treatment targets skin texture, fine lines and a variety of skin conditions.

Originally developed to speed up the healing process of wounds and post-surgery scars, it was also found to be an incredible rejuvenation tool for skin, too.

The cells in the skins dermis layer convert the light energy to fuel cells that work to rejuvenate the skin. The fibroblast cells in the dermis layer of the skin produce collagen and elastin, the LED feeds these cells allowing them to commence the production of collagen and elastin, as it would have in your youth(teens and early 20’s)!

You will see incredible results following your series of treatments. The complexion will appear plump with the new collagen, targeting your fine lines and new elastin that will bring that “snap” back into your skin.

Additional key points:
– No Down time
– No contra indications
– Pain free
– The light will target specific skin concerns such as acne, rosacea and hyper-pigmentation.
– Feels like your basking in the beautiful sun light
HERE is a link to proven studies

You will be required to attend the clinic ever second day. Following your series of LED light treatments in the final days leading up to your wedding you will have your final facial. In the “Isle Ready” package, we offer two varying facials, this is to target the varying concerns all brides face.

The most popular facial prior to the big day is the Oxygen Glow facial, this is probably most popular as brides have already completed a course of treatments with Face Plus Medispa and they simply just need that facial for that lovely natural glow on the day.

The Plumping Collagen facial is often to those who need a little extra plump and hydration. Both beautiful facials, we highly recommend you speak to your dermal therapist so they can best execute your treatment plan in the weeks leading up to your big day.

Make up tips: Bridal

Get ready for wedding season with these simple tips.

If you’re beauty obsessed, you have probably thought and taken all our Make up tips: Bridal, dos and don’ts into consideration. But for those who fear they haven’t thought of everything here are our Make up tips.

Everyone knows they have to have a makeup trial before the wedding but when is the best time to do it? It’s about three weeks before the big day but no more than that.

If you intend on faking tanning for the wedding, make sure you have the exact same fake tan on for your makeup trial.

1. Get a full body scrub before your fake tan appointment! This will allow your tan to go on smoothly and evenly. The last thing you want is spotty tan on one of the most important days of your life. Read about the treatment we offer HERE

2. Start gathering some makeup inspiration for your trial. It’s also a great idea to analyse the images and pick out what you like about the particular image you have collected.

Test a few shades at home during the day and night, this will allow you to see if it’s appropriate for the whole day. It’s not the day you want to be adventurous and try something new!

3. Don’t get caught up in current trends! These images last a lifetime.

4. Wear a top that matches the colour of your wedding dress on the day of your makeup trial. This will allow you to determine if the colour of the dress matches the overall look your makeup artist has created.

5. It should be daylight when you have your makeup trial.

6. Bring your veil or try on a veil at your trial! How does the makeup feel with the veil and how does it look? Don’t forget the veil sits very close or on your face, you need to determine if your lashes will bend into the lower lashes from the weight, are your lips rubbing up against the veil?

Take a little walk around, stand there with something in your hands to see how it feels and if the veil changes shape on the face.

7. Make sure your makeup will last the day if you don’t think you’ll want to reapply throughout the day. You will need that lipstick so make sure you have the shade available for reapplication.

8. Take lots of pictures, including with flash photography! This will allow you to see how your make up will capture on the day.

9. Take note of how long your trial makeup takes, you will need the same amount of time if not more. On the day, there are many distractions and you want to make sure you allow enough time to get your hair and makeup done before the rest of your bridal party.

10. Finally, if you want your makeup to look perfect on the day it comes down to one thing… PERFECT SKIN! Read about our “The Works” bridal skin and face package HERE

Check 1,2,3: Final countdown

“If I get married, I want to be very married”- Audrey Hepburn

In the lead up to your big day, it can be easy to fall into the trap of ticking boxes. Venue? Check. Catering. Check. Music. Done!

While it is wonderful to be organised, it can also be difficult falling into the trap of ‘must get everything done’, rather than enjoying the moment for what it really is – planning an amazing celebration of your love!

Rather than looking back on this time as stressful and overwhelming, wouldn’t you rather look back on it with fondness and joy?
On top of this, for some brides the idea of having all eyes on them is almost too much to bare – especially if you have body image or self-love challenges.

Remember, contrary to popular belief, now is NOT the time to put yourself on any strict diets or exercise overhauls – which can just lead to additional stress, burnout and fatigue in the lead up to your big day.

Rather, take it slow and steady. Make LIFESTYLE changes, rather than drastic decisions.
Read our bridal diet advice HERE

Here are some simple tips to enjoy the lead up to your big day, and also work on your self-love, so that when it does come around you are feeling happy, confident and relaxed:

Find exercise you actually enjoy
Don’t like boot camp? Great, don’t do it. Now is the time to try a bunch of different training ideas and find one that you love. You don’t need to train 7 days a week to get your ‘bride-body’ in shape, and exercise should NEVER feel like a chore.

Exercise because you enjoy it, and for all of the amazing additional health benefits – stress relief, glowing skin, and a healthy physique.

Start a gratitude practice
There really is no time like now to start practicing gratitude for the things you have today. Each day, write down three things you are grateful for – they can be specific to wedding planning, or more general life gratitude’s. Even better is if you get your fiancé involved!

Gratitude helps you live in the moment, and alleviates stress, as you become more aware of all of the amazing things you already have in your life.
HERE are some ways to best manage your support crew and partner

Schedule self-love time
Take time out just for YOU every single week. This is time for you to do exactly what you WANT, not what you think you SHOULD do. If that means not touching a single thing to do with wedding planning, so be it.

Put aside a half day every week to just be in your own company – book in for a massage or facial, get a manicure or just read a book in bed. Whatever makes you feel calm, content and relaxed.
Read our blog on self-love HERE

Reconnect with your partner
As the big day draws closer, it will be easy to have the wedding as front of mind. To avoid having ALL conversations with your fiancé revolving around the day, plan some surprise, special date nights, that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the wedding.

Share with them all the things you love about them, and just enjoy being in each other’s company without the stresses of the big day.
Remember that this is just another chapter in your lifetime of love together – enjoy it for what it is, the planning and all!

Mums the word: Boost target areas

The Mother of The Bride is an important part of any Wedding.

We may sound like a broken record in some of our blogs but we are strong believers in working on the skin before you start injectables.

If the skin is not at its healthiest you will not see the best and optimal results of your injectable treatments.

Mother of the bride, mum, it’s probably the most important day/role of your life, unless of course you had a wedding day of your own.

Regardless of your age we don’t recommend performing any harsh or drastic procedures without a clear plan and target areas. This plan can be created in your cosmetic consultation, read about our cosmetic consultation process HERE

For the big day we Face Plus Medispa have created a 1 month package that will have you glowing on the day! Skin will be smooth, plump and make up will glide on, on the day.

What does the plan include?
We have chosen to include two Herbal Hydration with LED Light add ons, these two pack a punch but ZERO down time.

The Herbal Hydration is anti-aging, brightening, firming, activates the skins repair mechanisms and is an effective regenerative treatment. You can read more about the Herbal Hydration Peel HERE

The LED Light therapy treatments are probably one of our most simple yet highly effective and results driven treatments. There are three lights and each light will target varying areas of concerns.

Yellow light – Softens fine lines and improves skin tone and texture

Red light – Plump, hydrate and lessen the appearance of fine lines

Blue light – Designed specifically to target bacterial presence in the skin. Perfect for anyone who might be seeing redness or a sudden break out.
You can read more about the treatment HERE

In addition to the Herbal Hydration Peel and the LED Light Therpay, this one month package includes the all-important final facial, this facial will have you event ready!

The Resurfacing Stem Cell Facial with an LED light add on is perfect prior to any event, the facial will be effective 5 to 1 day prior to the big day.!

Following the facial you will instantly gain smoother, brighter and energised skin! Your wrinkles and fine lines will also appear less visible. Find out more about the facial HERE

Have a little more time?
If you have about three to six months you can opt for procedures such as the “Liquid Face Lift”, read more HERE or “Sculptra”.

Sculptra is a revolutionary treatment that has been available across Face Plus Medispa clinics since 2015. This injectable treatment isn’t just for those over the age of 40 but we have primarily been treating those over the age of 40.

Sculptra isn’t just like any other injectable, Sculptra works by restarting the natural process of producing collagen. This isn’t like other injectables that are quick fixes and last between 6 months to a year, you don’t see the results immediately, but see improvements in approximately four to six weeks.

During this time, you skin will appear fresher, features more youthful as unwanted deep lines, wrinkles and sunken areas gradually diminish!

Most areas of the face can be treated:
– Naso labial folds
– Cheek bone
– Hollow Cheeks
– Temple area
– Décolletage
– Accordion lines
– Chin
– Marionette lines
– Jaw line

Are any of the above listed areas concerning you?

Pep talk: HydroPeptide Range

The DNA in our cells holds key information necessary for life, it also determines why we age.

Let’s talk about the basics of ageing:

1. Our aged cells no longer respond to normal cues

2. Collagen production slows down, right down

3. Cell turnover is less efficient. Read about the rate of cell turn over HERE

4. Skin thins, Dermal Epidermal Junction flattens, wrinkles form and deepen

5. Cellular health is compromised
The HydroPeptide range is dedicated to creating solutions to all of the above concerns and at the centre of the solution is “Peptides”.

Peptides have the ability to improve skin without negative effects. Peptides are short chains of amino acids or protein fragments that act as cellular communicators to signal the skin to act in a healthier, younger-looking way.

Now, who doesn’t want to have healthier, younger looking skin?
Anyone over the age of 30 should be reaching for the HydroPeptide range, head to toe!

Of course, that is being quite greedy so here are the key products that you should consider:

Exfoliating Cleanser, HydroPeptide, $69
You can read about the cleanser HERE

Pre-Treatment Toner, HydroPeptide, $69
You can read about the toner HERE

Eye Authority, Eye Cream, HydroPeptide, $120
You can read about the eye cream HERE

We won’t recommend a cream, this will very much depend on your key concerns and your skin type.

The next product is a nice to have but one you could use prior to a big event if you haven’t had a chance to have a face with Face Plus Medispa.
5X Power Peel, HydroPeptide, $99

Read more about the peeling treatment pads HERE

40 and over: Perfecting your look, the secret

How to achieve an age defying look without over doing it.

As you get older you need to come up with tricky highlighting techniques and putty to ensure the makeup doesn’t crease into those lines that seem to be getting deeper daily.

One the most important things that must be included during the makeup application process is PRIMER! There are many primers available on the market but as you age it’s important find one that is suitable for your needs.

Our Bondi Beach location stocks the beautiful Curtis Collection By Victoria Curtis, Hydra Primer ($79).

This particular primer would fall into the “Cream Formula Face Primer”, this wouldn’t not be suitable for everyone as it usually has a thicker consistency and would be most appropriate for those with dry skin.

We highly recommend a “Silicone-Based Face Primer” for mature skin as it has a smooth and silkier consistency, when applied to the skin it leaves a velvety finish. Some will find that a silicone based primer may dry the skin, prior to applying you must ensure you have used a rich moisturiser.

For mature skin, we highly recommend the Dr Spiller, Collagen Cream ($126). The Collagen cream will provide the skin with long lasting anti-ageing protection. You can read more about the Collagen Cream HERE

As your skin begins to thin as you get older your skin will begin to appear duller and paler. A hydrating liquid foundation formula is a great way to add colour and depth to your complexion.

We encourage you to use warming colours, this will help balance out any redness that might be present on the skin.

Eyebrows are a very important part of your overall look. If they have grown sparse or faded with age it’s important that you use both pencil and powder to fill in the thin or balding areas. You can read our step by step, four step guide HERE

Loss of collagen causes your lips to breakdown, which is why they shrink and get dry. A little gloss will give them the appearance of plump hydrated lips! Applying a matte lipstick will also prevent the lipstick running through what is often called “smokers lines”, you can apply the gloss over the lipstick.

Read how dermal lips fillers can add back the lost volume and elasticity to your lips HERE

Finally, do not make the mistake of applying powder over your whole face. Simple apply it on your nose, forehead and chin, avoid your cheeks and under area, which is where the powder tends to cake, fall and settle into those fine lines.

Don’t forget to trial the makeup look yourself! Maybe event take some selfies to see you are happy with the colours and the overall look and feel.

Follow the above tips and we guarantee you will feel and look beautiful in those wedding pictures.

Varying make up ranges are available across all three clinics. Call you nearest clinic for more information:
