How to: Look good in your 30’s

Tips on how to have healthy looking skin in your 30’s.

Have you read the “How to: Look good in your 20’s blog? If you haven’t already, do.

Tips in there still apply in your 30’s. Read HERE

1. Are you wearing sunscreen? Step it up a notch, invest in a few hats.Beach hats and everyday baseball caps, the more protection you provide your skin the better.

2. Be aware of your facial expressions. We love our laugh lines but there are frown lines that sometimes give away more than you would like. Be conscious of your expressions when stressed, concentrating or even angry.

This action alone will really help with those lines. Do try and stress less, you can read some of our stress management techniques HERE

3. Keep it clean! Get great makeup brushed and clean them on a regular basis. Read our how to HERE . Keep the skin clean too, cleanse at the end of each day. If you tend to wear make up on a daily basis consider double cleansing.

4. We hope you’re moisturising, don’t neglect your neck, décolletage and HANDS!

5. In terms of makeup, don’t overdo it but get to know, highlighter. The light reflecting off the selected areas of skin will bring out your natural features whilst making your skin appear healthy, fresh and young.

6. Hair, the malting is not limited to summer now. It’s time to have a strong idea of what suits you. Find a hairdresser and stick to them. Start incorporating a leave in conditioner to keep the mane healthy, shiny and strong.

7. Healthy eating is important now more than ever. As you enter into your 30’s, your body will begin to reach its toxicity limit and cannot process toxins as well as it used to.

The build-up of toxins can occur due to too much caffeine or alcohol, not drinking enough water, junk food, stress, lack of sleep and exercise. This results in your metabolism slowing right down and you won’t look or feel as great as you use to. You need to rethink your lifestyle choices, no more crash dieting, don’t skip meals and plan meals!

8. Sleep. If you’re not getting enough sleep this can lead to a dull complexion and dark circles, you appear much older than you are. You may also find that the caffeine is keeping you up.

9. Don’t pick at your skin or touch it too much throughout the day. If you can afford it, lock in a monthly facial. Facials are more important than shoes in your 30’s! Read some of our treatment options here for 30 something year old’s HERE.

Don’t be so tough on yourself, read our wellness blog for the 30’s HERE, You don’t have to have everything figured out right now.

I’m in my thirties: Should I have it all figured out?

Nobody has the same story so don’t compare your life with other’s.

Disclaimer alert – I am not yet in my thirties. However, I do have a lot of friends who have reached this ‘milestone’ and additionally, see many clients in their thirties and above.

A recurring theme I have noticed with most of these people (as well as myself and my friends who have thirty ‘looming’ in the horizon) is that, come thirty, we put this immense pressure on ourselves to have our lives sorted.

Surely in our thirties we should be married with kids (or on the way there), we should be working our dream jobs with amazing careers, we should own a home, and have travelled the world…I could go on, but to be honest it exhausts me.

All of these ‘shoulda’ – as if life is a series of tick boxes.
The truth of the matter is, once you hit thirty, you DON’T have to have life figured out. In fact, I see clients well into their sixties who don’t have all the answers – and this is NORMAL.

It is part of life. And yet, for some reason we are so hard on ourselves when we haven’t achieved a certain amount of “things” by the time we reach an age milestone. Let’s flip our thoughts shall we.

What really matters to you?
Really – what are your key values? What makes you happy and lights you up? Often, we get so caught up in a life we think we ‘should’ be living, that we lose sight of what is actually important to us.

For some, this may be health and vitality. For others, maybe it is family and time spent with loved ones.

Recalibrating what ACTUALLY matters to you, and then positioning your energy on THESE things is an incredible way to start shifting the way you see your life.

Don’t know where to start? Sessions with your own coach (like me) can help you start to crystallise the important things in your life that you may currently be overlooking.

Practice gratitude
Rather than focusing on what you DON’T have, or haven’t achieved, start to look at all the things you DO have, and all of your life achievements. Go on, take out a notebook or the notes in your phone and start a list.

What are the things you are most proud of in your life right now? What makes you happy? What have been the happiest moments of your life? Notice that these have NOTHING to do with your age?

Try to practice gratitude every day – focus on three things you are most grateful for in your life – they could be people, moments or things. The more you reflect on the good, the more good you will notice you have in your life. Now THAT is something to be proud of.

Treat yourself with love
I go on and on about self love, because it is so damn important to live a happy and guilt-free life. When was the last time you booked yourself in for a massage or facial ‘just because’? Or run yourself a hot bath with candles?

We are constantly putting off looking after ourselves because indulging in pampering can be seen as selfish. To that I say, screw it! Take out your calendar and book something in that makes you feel good – right now.

Regardless of whether we are twenty, thirty or eighty, we deserve to feel loved, special and pampered – and these are all within our own control. I have written a blog in the past about self love, read HERE

Be Kind: Preventative Measures

As a 30 something year old writing this blog there are so many things that I would like to say to the 20-year-old self.

In your 20’s you often so put way too much pressure on yourself to look “perfect”. Instagram didn’t come into play until my late 20’s, this I am thankful for!
Check out our wellness blog for the 20-somethings HERE

In your 20’s it’s really the time to be taking great care of your skin to maintain the youthful bounce and glow present. We’re not telling you take any drastic measures, no way!

What we are telling you is that you need to gain a strong understanding of what your skin needs and how it is aging.

Book yourself in for a skin consultation, this will ensure that you are on the right track to youthful skin even into your 50’s! Check out our skin consultation process HERE

We all begin to lose collagen and elastin from the age of about 25, at 25 you’ll see your body and skin changing. Some will see fine lines and wrinkles appearing a lot sooner than others, this is really normal, it just means that you need to start taking serious care of your skin.

Also consider rethinking your diet to naturally boost collagen, read HERE
When you start to see these subtle signs of aging we recommend a course of Laser Genesis, you can read more about this pain free, no downtime anti-aging laser treatment HERE

If this isn’t quite enough, it usually is BUT it could be time to consider injectables. You can read more about our cosmetic consultation process HERE

If you’re in your early 20’s here are the things you need to start incorporating into your weekly/daily routine, if you don’t already:

1. Exfoliate every second day, you can do this in the shower! Find an exfoliator that doesn’t strip the skin. We recommend the Dr Spiller, Jojoba Peeling Cream, $68

2. You should have started already but use sun protection, DAILY! Read the importance of sunblock HERE

3. If you’re not an active person, start!

4. We’re finding 20 something are wearing a lot of makeup lately. Make sure you use an appropriate cleanser and toner for your skin type. HERE are a few of our essential products

Prevention is key BUT don’t overdo it, this is why we highly recommend you visit for a skin consultation. We often see 20 something year old panic a little and overdo it causing damage to their skin.

Be kind to your skin, it’s the only one you have! It’s the largest organ and it does a lot for you.

Moisture: The right level for you

Moisturisation, it is such an important part of any skin regime.

As we are all well aware, we all have varying skin types. Some have dry skin, some have oily skin and some have combination skin!

Given that we all vary, it’s important that we use the right level of moisture for our skin. For those with oily or acne prone skin we know that you are quite fearful of using a moisturising cream. Those who have acne, the dryness will make your acne worse.

Acne will occur due to an overproduction of sebum in the oil glands. It is important to find a product that will help reduce sebum production, clear congestion, control lipid oxidation and soothe irritated skin.

We recommend the Ultra Hydrating Lotion by ULTRACEUTICALS $76

This lightweight lotion has been specifically designed for oilier skin, available at our Bondi Beach clinic or via phone order.

Avoiding the use of an appropriate moisturiser can often lead to the development of wrinkles or make the existing fine lines and wrinkles worse in appearance.

The options for creams are really endless, you really need to know what your skin needs and that is difficult to tell by simply looking at your skin in the mirror.

For those who have dry skin we highly recommend the Dr Spiller, Collagen cream, read about this luxurious cream HERE

If you have normal to oily skin a great option would be the Dr Spiller, Royal Jelly cream, read more HERE
Some often find that this cream is a little too light for the cooler months and move to the Dr Spiller, Propolis Cream Day and  Dr Spiller, Propolis Cream Night $80

The Dr Spiller, Propolis Cream is available is a day and night option.

The Day cream contains the following key ingredients:

Propolis, an antibacterial bee resin, rich in minerals, vitamins, plant resins, plant waxes enzymes and essential oils.

Royal Jelly, is also an antibacterial bee secretion that is rich in bimimetic water, protein, fatty acids, vitamins B5, B6 and C, trace minerals and enzymes. This ingredient is highly effective in rebalancing and protecting the moisture levels of the skin.

Vitamin E, a skin-identical potent antioxidant naturally secreted by the sebaceous gland for environmental moisture.

Lanolin and octyl methoxycinnamate, are both non-irritating sunscreens that protect against UVB.

Avocado, grapeseed and sunflower oils, are protective botanical oils rich in biomimetic triglycerides, fatty acids, lecithin, wax esters, squalene, vitamins D, E and K.

The Dr Spiller, Propolis, Night cream contains many of the same ingredients as the day omitting the sun protective ingredients. The cream does include the addition of:

Retinyl Palmitate, a derivative of vitamin A and it assists in renewing the appearance of the skin. It also works as an effective antioxidant that boosts the activity of vitamins C and E.

Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant that nurtures natural collagen synthesis for a suppler appearance.
Feel like you need to update your moisturiser but not sure what direction you should be heading?

How to: Look good in your 20’s

Some of the tips that we share with you in this blog will be relevant to most ages!

What we are trying to say is that it’s really important to start these tips and habits sooner rather than later!

1. You’ve read, seen and heard this a million times BUT drink lots of water! Not just any water though, read more HERE Part one and Part two HERE.

It is really important to be taking care of your beauty from the inside out. If you can’t cope with the bland taste of water alone, the blog has a few tips on various ways of keeping hydrated.

We also recommend the beautiful range of elixirs from The Beauty Chef, there are a few tasty flavours that target varying areas:
Hydration, Inner Beauty Boost, read more HERE
Collagen, Inner Beauty Boost, read more HERE

2. Be bold! Your 20’s is a great time to experiment with different makeup and hair looks. But try not to wear too much foundation/coverage. If you’re covering something up, now is the perfect time to be correcting any skin concerns you may have. That bag? It can wait!

3. Do not over pluck your brows. Keep them under control. HERE are out four steps to perfect brows

4. Quit smoking!!! It’s a bad habit that greatly impacts the health of your skin. It restricts the supply of blood to the skin and not to mentioned “smokers” lips! As you age smoker’s lips will become more prominent.

5. Take lukewarm water showers over hot showers. The heat from hot showers dry both your hair and skin. As we age the natural oils on the scalp will decrease, try washing your hair less frequently to preserve the oils. Two words, dry shampoo.

6. Don’t neglect your neck and hands. We see a lot of patients who took very good care of the skin on their face but completely neglected their neck and hands. You’ve been warned.

7. This one may just be a beauty myth but we don’t think it is. Drinking from a straw gives you wrinkles! A lot of people drink from a straw due to teethe whitening BUT any kind of repetitive movement does cause wrinkles.

8. Be kind to your skin and take some preventative measures. Read more here INSERT LINK WHEN YOU HAVE CREATED THE BLOG

That’s it, try and keep to these key rules and you’ll be cruising into through your 20’s and straight into your 30’s in confidence. Don’t be surprised if you hear “Really? You only look 21!”.

Expectations: The Tricky Twenties…

Turning twenty is such a defining life moment.

You are no longer the teenager, and with that comes a level of relief – but also a moment of nervousness. Should being twenty-something FEEL any different? Should I have my life figured out?

The deeper you delve into your twenties, the more this question comes up – 25 (oh God closer to 30 than 19), 26 (everyone I know is getting engaged and I haven’t even finished Uni yet), 27 (why do hangovers hurt so much all of a sudden?), 28 (since when did exercising become such a chore?), 29 (okay, one more year for me to get my life in order before I hit the big 3-0).
Sound familiar?

Your twenties are an amazing age – they are known to be some of the most life-defining you will experience. Time to study your real passions, define a career path, travel the world, move out of home (unless you’re living in Sydney, in which case it’s move BACK home) and fall in love.

BUT your twenties can also become a trap for trickiness when we start thinking they are the time we are meant to have our lives all figured out.

Comparison is a biggie too (thanks social media!) – because being in your twenties sees friends and loved ones making HUGE life decisions – buying a house, working long hours in a career, getting engaged and married, starting a family.

For some of us, these things are amazing and something to look forward to, while for others, this is enough to want to move overseas and never look back (another common twenties trend).

Either way, your twenties are a time to really find what makes YOU happy – and not living for anyone else.

A common trend I see with my twenty-something clients is this notion of comparing our lives, not only our friends and families who are seemingly more ‘successful’, but to complete strangers online. People we don’t even know.

This comparisonitis goes so far that many of us twenty-somethings are even comparing how we look to the filtered, edited images we see online.

This body image comparisonitis has become an alarming trend for women in their twenties (men too) and can have really serious effects. No longer are eating disorders a common trend among teenagers only – eating disorders are very real in young people in their twenties and up.

What these mental challenges stem from are feelings of not being ‘good enough’ or worthy. Looking at yourself in the mirror and not liking what you see. This isn’t made any easier when we are engaging in a digital world where it is acceptable for us to ‘swipe right or left’ on a prospective partner, judging mainly by what we see.

So, how do we counteract these feelings of low self-esteem and comparisonitis in our twenties?
Here are some quick tips for you:

  • Do a social media audit. Review your Instagram feed for a day – any post that makes you feel BAD about yourself, rather than inspired and happy – unfollow. You have the power to control social media – it doesn’t have to control you. The minute you are feeling bad about something you are reading or seeing online, hit that unfollow button. On that, only follow pages that make you feel GOOD about yourself. It’s all about Self love, read more HERE
  • Start to engage in activities that we used to in our teens – things that make us truly happy! Did you used to like Art class in high school? Then find a local class and start up again! Was writing your thing? Start journaling again! We get so caught up in the notion of ‘growing up’ that we start to leave pieces of ourselves behind – your twenties is a time to re-engage with these things and embrace your inner child!
  • Spend time with people who make you happy and feeling good about yourself. Chances are you will start drifting from high school friends in your twenties – this is normal and okay. Cherish the friendships with people who light you up, make you laugh and inspire you. Don’t spend any time with people who make you feel any less

Too often we place unrealistic pressure on ourselves to have our lives sorted by the time we are in our twenties – when in fact, life is just beginning!

Take it easy and you will come to see that these years are some of the greatest of your life.
