Pores, no more: Minimising to photoshopped skin

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Pores, those holes that effect your skin texture, overall appearance of skin and smooth application of makeup.
Let’s take a few steps back, what are pores? A pore is a small opening in the skin which allows oil and sweat to reach the surface. We have two different types of pores: oil and sweat pores.
The cause of enlarged pores is when your oil glands make too much oil. This excess oil mixes with dead skin cells in the pore, causing it to clog. The clog stops the oil from flowing freely, which causes the pore itself to enlarge.
The pore enlarges to provide extra room for the oil to flow out, the oil still may become trapped by the dead skin, this is most common around the nose.
Homecare is vital and we share all of our favourite products our blog post, Shrinking: Products designed to target pores.
Treatments are equally if not more important than homecare if you are looking to target large pores.
One of the key treatments Face Plus Medispa prescribe to target pore size is Laser Genesis. Laser Genesis is a revolutionary non-ablative laser with zero down time, requires no numbing and is very safe.
Most patients describe the laser feeling as though they have the warm rays of the sun glowing on their face, without the UV rays, of course!
The Laser Genesis light goes through the epidermis, without affecting it in anyway.
The laser rejuvenates the skin by:
– Shrinking the blood vessels that are making the skin red
– Breaking up the fibrotic and bound down acne scars
– Inducing new collagen to grown to smooth even skin texture and wrinkles
Laser Genesis gently heats the middle layer of the skin. When the collagen secreting cells in that layer reach a certain temperature, they start creating new collagen. Following a few treatments patients will see pores start to fill in and skin tone begin to even out.
Results from a single treatment of Laser Genesis will be visible for some in a matter of days, the best results are seen when a series of Laser Genesis treatments are received 4 to 6 weeks apart. You can find out more about the treatment here.
Following a full round of treatments patients will see new healthy skin with smaller pores, even skin tone and texture, reduction in visible capillaries, minimised fine wrinkles and glow.
Patients report a flawless complexion, almost like photoshopped skin!

If redness and enlarged pores are your key concern skin needling is also a high beneficial way to target both concerns. You can find out more about the needling treatment here.

There are a few in clinic treatments that are suitable for minimising pores, check out our “Pore, no more” blog.
There are an endless number of products available on the market that claim to assist with pore size. The first step is to identify the reason why your skin maybe experiencing large pores. This is why it is important to receive a thorough skin consultation followed by a treatment place and homecare package, read about our skin consultation process here.
There are a few tips that are relevant to all who are looking to minimise pore size:
1. Exfoliate your skin!! In winter we recommend you exfoliate your skin 3 times a week and during summer 2 times.
Need to know why and with what? Read here

Over the counter toners interrupt the PH levels in your skin and can often cause more damage to the skin. The Dr Spiller, Cucumber Toner is usually our go to, read more here
The Dr Spiller, Cucumber Toner, $68

We are going to are going to breakdown the product recommendations into two sections:
A) Oil based: you’re probably thinking “What?? Oil based? I have large pores because I produce too much oil!!”. You’re likely too dry and you’re not using the products so the pores are being clogged up by dead skin cells and leading to an over production of oil.
B) Acid based: The skin must be appropriately prepared before proceeding with acid based products. These range of products may be too strong for some skin types.
All products recommended can only be prescribes by a skincare professional.
1. A) Oil based recommendations:
Dr Spiller, Vitamin A Night, $183

Dr Spiller, Vitamin A Day, $167

The two Dr Spiller, Vitamin A products are designed for dry to combination skin. It is designed to restore and normalise the moisture balance and visibly improve the skin’s resilience resulting in a smoother complexion.
1. Dr Spiller, Royal Jelly Cream, $94

My pore friend: Hide pores with makeup

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
We don’t recommend covering pores with makeup as a long-term solution. Makeup will often enlarge the pores further and if the makeup is not thoroughly removed this can have an adverse effect.
We highly recommend you try these treatments and these products to actively target large pores, if it is a skin concern of yours.
Once you have a thorough skincare regime in place, primers are the best thing to smooth the surface of the skin in preparation for makeup.
Primer will visibly reduce the shine and minimise the appearance of pores.
It is always important to use a primer that suits your skin i.e. liquid primers are ideal for drier skin types and a thicker gel like primer for oily skin.

This primer assist with oil control and will work to visibly reduce the appearance of pores and diminish shine to create a photo finish matte look. The Smooth Affair for Oily Skin contains the revolutionary “PoreAway ™” technology, with technology like that how could you not?

Another great product available from our Bondi Beach clinic is the…
Curtis Collection By Victoria, Skin refining Face Primer, $49

Remember, clinic treatments and the right home care range is essential to target all skin concerns including enlarged pores. Oil production: Foods that lead to enlarged pores

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Oil production: Foods that lead to enlarged pores

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
If you are an avid reader of the Face Plus Medispa blogs you will know that we strongly believe skin health and diet go hand in hand, this is often overlooked. Your complexion becomes oily when the sebaceous glands secrete more sebum than they need to and this leads to enlarged pores.
Oily skin is difficult to control but changing your diet and reducing your consumption of unhealthy foods, you will see positive improvements to your skin.
Here are the foods you should avoid if you have oily skin:

Dairy products
Milk, butter, cheese and milk chocolate contain high levels of hormones which can lead to an increased production of oil and blocked pores. What to blocked pores leads to? Large pores! Dairy is also lined with acne and other skin conditions.
If dairy has been your main source of calcium up your intake of leafy greens and almonds to get your recommended daily dose!
If you need a little chocolate in your like, we suggest you opt for a good quality dark chocolate, this should not have an adverse effect on your skin.

Refined carbohydrates
Refined grains lose important nutrients and fibre when they are processed. This has an impact on your blood sugar and can lead to an increased production of oil.
What are refines carbs? White bread, white rice, white pasta and cereals fall into this category. Foods you should opt for instead? Brown whole meal bread, brown rice, whole meal pasta, quinoa and oats. Look for foods that are not as processed with higher levels of fibre.
You want to keep your blood sugar levels more stable, which means your energy levels are steadier too.

Saturated fats and trans fats
Saturated fats are the most harmful fats as it can increase the level of cholesterol in your blood and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Saturated fats also increase inflammation in the skin and lead to excess oil being produced.
Saturated fats are most commonly found in deep fried foods and mass produced fast food goods.
Trans fats also have negative effects on your skin. A trans fat is formed when oil goes through a hardening process called hydrogenation. Trans fats are found in processed foods.
When selecting meats opt for lean poultry, oily fish like salmon and unseasoned nuts. When cooking use healthy fats such as olive oil.

Sugar
If you don’t know how bad sugar is for your skin, then you’ve been living under a rock in mars! When the sugar spikes your blood sugar levels the body responds by producing more insulin, which encourages the glands to produce more oil and heightens the risk of developing acne and larger pores.
Limit your consumption of refined sugars and consume natural sugars in moderation. Be wary of processed foods that claim to be low in sugar as they will often contain for sodium/salt or fat to compensate!
All of the food items that we have mentioned should be avoided or consumed in moderation. In addition, we suggest your curb the sodium and alcohol as they both dehydrate the skin.
Results from diet changes won’t be visible immediately but you should start to see a different in about 4 to 6 weeks.
One thing you need more of? WATER!! Read the importance of water here and here, so important, we wrote two blogs about it!

Restoration: Bright & light

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Restoration: Bright & light

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Age, stress, hormonal imbalance, sun, tobacco and careless lifestyle are all factors involved in skin ageing.
The skin complexion as you age will dull, lines will develop, texture may become uneven and wrinkles appear. All of these factors will create dark areas on your face and the skin will gradually lose the ability to reflect light, this is often why the face appears sad and tired.
When these signs begin to appear, you are the ideal candidate for the Beauty Boost treatment. The Beauty Boost is a safe and simple injectable treatment that consists of microinjections evenly across an area or concentrated in an area.
The treatment is suitable for the face, neck and also the neckline which is a particularly fragile area often ignored by traditional treatments.
The Beauty Boost is designed to:
– Smooth features
– Plump
– Disappearance of dark areas
– Facial oval redrawn
– Disappearance of dark areas
The Beauty Boost is a hyaluronic acid injection that will compensate for the natural loss of this substance (in your skin) and stimulate the auto production of collagen  to target wrinkles, volume loss and skin glow.
During the session, the cosmetic nurse will treat the area with micro injections with a fine needle of very small quantities of Beauty Boost along the lines of wrinkles and evenly spread over the surface of the whole face. This treatment technique allows the nutrients to arrive at the heart of the skin.
The Beauty Boost can be manually injected with syringes and needles, but also electronically for patient comfort.
Your session will last about 20 to 45 minutes depending on the treatment area.
Following the session, the patient may return to work but a few small spots may appear at the injection points but they generally disappear quite quickly.
Results are seen immediately following the first session. The skin has a better colour, less creased, better hydrated and becomes suppler. Gradually, from one session to the next, the complexion will become increasingly radiant and the skin becomes firmer.
The micro-injections are shallow and performed with very fine needles. For additional comfort your cosmetic injector may apply a topical numbing cream prior to the treatment.
The Beauty Boosts like all other hyaluronic acid treatment are temporary and depending on several factors: skin type, age and treatment technique.
For optimum results, a treatment contains three sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart. Following the first initial treatment patients are only required to have maintenance session 2 to 3 times a year.
What do patients think?
“The result is natural and this is what I was looking for” Lisa, 47
“My impression is that my face is firmer, my skin replenished… I feel better about myself” Anna, 35

Necklace lines: Best ways to cover necklines

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Necklace lines: Best ways to cover necklines

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Necklines appear from a young age and before prior to The Beauty Boost treatment there was little you could do to correct necklines.
The neck is constantly moving and lines on the neck appear stronger because of this. For those who are not quite ready for the injectable Beauty Boost treatment here are some tips on covering up:

  1. Use a scarf: it’s a pretty obvious one but very on trend at the moment!
  2. Laser: If the lines are still very subtle the Titan Laser treatment might be something you can consider. Read more here.
One of the key issues this area faces is the loss of collagen and elastin, Laser Genesis is also an effective neck treatment that some can consider, read more here.
  3. Creams: If the lines aren’t as prominent as yet, prevention is key so start investing is some active creams that will help boost and lift collagen. We recommend the Dr Spiller, Cellular Night Cream.
Don’t forget to use an SPF every day. The sun’s dangerous rays damage to your skin texture and cause more lines. Don’t skip this one, read about the benefits of using an SPF here
  4. Makeup tips: Concealer is key.
Avoid products that will draw attention to the lines, products such as highlighter are very on trend but not your friend when it comes to necklines.
Aim for a matte concealer, this will be the most flattering.
When looking for a concealer, don’t skimp. You want to find a concealer highly pigmented. Higher the pigment the less you will need to use on the skin.
If necklines are strong makeup may lighten the lines but they will not be invisible.Outside of cosmetic procedures we have recommended there are no lotions and potions that will make those lines disappear.

Happier: Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Happier: Mirror Mirror on the Wall

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
In my albeit relatively short time as a wellness coach, I have lost count of the number of women who sit opposite me and tear their appearance to shreds.
I need to lose weight
My thighs are too big
I hate my smile
My skin is gross
I don’t like my feet
I wish my hair was different
I’m so pale
I could go on an on.
Beautiful, gentle, kind and loving women who are constantly looking at themselves in the mirror and tearing their appearance to shreds. Thinking that if only they LOOKED differently, then life would be better.
We do it to ourselves.
If I lose those 5 kilos, I will be happier
If my face looked different, I would feel more confident about myself
Constantly putting goal posts in place related to our appearance. When we LOOK a certain way, we will FEEL a certain way.
I’m sorry to break it to you my loves, but this actually isn’t how it works.
If you are looking at yourself in the mirror and berating your appearance, there are far deeper issues to be worked on at an emotional level.
WHY do you think weighing less equates to happiness? Is it a story you are telling yourself around being ‘overweight’ and what that might mean to you?
Feeling unloveable, worthless or just not good enough?
These feelings will not go away regardless of the changes you make to your appearance. The REAL work that needs to be done here is the soul work.
And take it from a girl who has been there, done that. A few years ago I signed up for one of those 12 week body challenges. I weighed less than I ever have, had the abs and thigh gap and the low body fat percentage. And I also had more severe anxiety than ever before, my health dropped significantly as I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue and leaky gut and I was SO unhappy.
Flash forward to now, where I am the heaviest I have ever weighed – and I couldn’t be happier OR healthier. So what changed?
My mindset.
So HOW do you start looking in the mirror and loving what you see REGARDLESS of where you are at physically?
Catch your stories
Next time you look at yourself in the mirror, pay attention to the thoughts running through your head. What are you telling yourself? How are you talking about yourself? Would you let your bestie talk that way about herself?
This is about awareness, and is really the first step in any significant change. The more you can catch yourself talking poorly about your appearance, the more likely you can also CHANGE that dialogue – which is the goal.
Change them up
Once you start becoming super aware of your negative stories, start to change them up.
If you are telling yourself you are fat, change it to – I am healthy, strong and vibrant. If you are bemoaning your skin or face, repeat something about yourself that you love – maybe it’s your hair, or your kindness or your determination (remember it doesn’t have to be about looks!)
Own your insecurities
Start to keep a journal on your beliefs around your physical appearance – what were you taught about ‘looks’ growing up? Where is your appearance holding you back? What would you be doing differently if you loved yourself fully?
Enlist someone to help you
Self-love, body love and loving your whole self – cellulite and wrinkles and all – is not often a journey you can conquer alone. There is a myriad of self-love gurus available online, in the Personal Development section in Dymocks or even sessions with Wellness Coaches, like me. Don’t feel like you have to forge this path to self-love alone.
Read our blog on self-love here
And remember – you are so worthy of your own love. One day you will look in the mirror and smile as you embrace yourself for WHO you are. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone.

Internal lift: Re-sculpt

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Loose skin and jowls are natural signs of aging, doesn’t mean we need to be ok with it! The production of collagen slows as we age and this is the main reason why skin loses its firmness, read some of our natural collagen boosting techniques here.
Aging is a natural process and we never suggest dramatic changes to try and wind back the clock. We strongly believe in addressing the underlying causes of facial aging and not just the visible symptoms (wrinkles, lines and jowls).
A product that stands by this belief is the Sculptra injectable treatment. Sculptra is quickly becoming Face Plus Medispa most popular antiaging treatments for anyone aged between 35 to 70 years of age and we know exactly why!
This will likely be music to some ears, Sculptra is a more permanent collagen stimulating injectable! Over time patient s will see facial volume restoration and wrinkles and folds looking fuller and can last more than two years!
The key differences between Sculptra and other collagen boosting products:
Collagen creams are great, if the skin has been taken care of we love the Dr Spiller Collagen cream, read more here.
Ingesting collagen supplements facilitate the production of collagen within the body, try out Beauty Chef, Collagen Elixir , taste great and good for you.
Other injectables we offer at Face Plus Medispa are temporary and will last between 3 months to 1 year. This includes muscle relaxants and fillers. A great alternative for those who are conscious of the signs of aging or looking to enhance certain facial features.
Unlike other injectables the results of Sculptra take about three to four months to fully appear. Patients will require a total of three treatments 4 to 6 weeks apart for optimum results.
The injectable is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body and helps to rebuild lost collagen. Sculptra is injected deep into the dermis.
Sculptra is not designed for those looking for fuller lips, it is ideal for:
Smile lines, between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds).
Marionette lines or laugh lines, these lines frame your mouth.
Chin wrinkles that may be appearing.
If the wrinkles are shallow to deep these can be corrected.
Sounds too good to be true? Let’s get down to the details!
– The results will not be visible overnight like fillers or even weeks like muscle relaxants
– You will need a series of treatments, three in total before results are visible
– This will not reverse the aging process!
It is an excellent treatment for those looking for subtle changes that last over two years!
Any side effects? Following a clinical trial and experiences based on our patient feedback:
– Redness
– Swelling
– Tenderness
– Some pain in injection site
– Bruising
– Bleeding
– Lumps
These are all common side effects that appear following most injectable treatments.

Often as you age your skin becomes more sensitive and you may also see more fine lines, wrinkles and crepiness.
The HydroPeptide, Up lift has been designed for aging sensitive skin. The gel serum minimises the appearance of crepiness, puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. Within just 2 weeks of use patients report that skin along their eye contour felt more lifted and appeared less crepey.
The hyaluronic acid present in three different molecular weights targets aging on three levels, acting almost like a filler, promoting elasticity, deeply hydrating and restoring.
Key ingredients:
Peptides,

The peptides work to drain and decongest under the eye area while enhancing elasticity and skin smoothness, increasing collagen production and glutathione for increased firmness. Dark circles will appear reduced, fine lines and wrinkles, and the eye area will look visibly lifted.
Triple hyaluronic acid, is the key ingredient that addresses skin tightening/ wrinkling filling and hydration. This is often visible instantly and offers long term skin tightening and hydration.
Argan extract, provides the skin with immediate tightening and smoothing. The skin will appear lifted, firmer and see a reduction in crepiness.
Allantoinm bisabolol + Calendula, are anti-inflammatories, calming, soothing and reducing sensitivity.
