As we grow and age, we start to notice changes in our appearance – and sometimes these can be confronting.
Sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, age marks – all reminders that we are not as youthful as we once were.
But rather than bemoan what we cannot control, how about we start to cultivate a true beauty that shines from within.
You know the beauty we are talking about – whether twenty, fourty or eighty, there are beautiful people the world over who exude beauty from the inside out. This isn’t a cliché – far from it. True beauty is cultivated from within.
Think of the most beautiful people in your life. It could be your mother, your sister or your bestie. Chances are, you aren’t just reflecting on their physical beauty. While that may be a bonus, it is far more likely you see them for the beautiful PERSON they are – their beautiful mind, heart and soul.
We all have those people in our lives – who shine when they walk in a room. Who light up our days. Do you think twice about whether they have sagging skin or an extra wrinkle? Hell no! (And if you do, maybe it is time to take a look at what you deem important qualities in a person. Kindness > smooth skin any day!)
So how can you cultivate that beauty from within?
To cultivate beauty at a soul level, nothing beats kindness. It could be helping a woman off the bus with her pram and shopping bags or giving a random compliment to a stranger.
Never underestimate the power of positive words – you just don’t know whose day you could leave a little brighter. Random acts of kindness are a wonderful way to develop a beautiful soul that glows from within. Each week, commit to one random act of kindness – it could be paying for a strangers coffee at the local shop, or delivering a bunch of flowers ‘just because’. Watch the world embrace your beautiful soul as kindness becomes a habit.
Love your insides
It’s no secret that what we feed our insides has a huge impact on our appearance. Eating for beauty is the real deal. A serious priority in cultivating glowing skin, healthy hair and nails, and clear eyes, is cleaning up your gut health.
Once your gut is running like a well coconut-oiled machine, you can guarantee your skin will be smoother, bags under your eyes will vanish and you will be glowing from the inside out.
To eat for gut health:
- Include fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi
- Load up on good fats like salmon, nuts, avocado and coconut oils
- Steer clear of gluten, sugar and processed foods (go all natural baby!)
- Make note of foods that make you feel bloated or uncomfortable and steer clear of these (and if that is everything, it could be an underlying issue in which case, seek the help of an integrated GP or naturopath)
- Sip on water with apple cider vinegar and lemon (to get those digestive enzymes fired up). Read about all of the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar here
- Consider a probiotic to support good gut bacteria (speak to your health care professional about the best one for you)
Nothing says beauty like that post workout glow. Not only will your body be thanking you for it, but you will be FEELING beautiful because of the feel good hormones making their way through your system.
Find a form of exercise you enjoy and make it a regular habit: try to exercise every day in some way. Remember it could be as simple as a stroll around your block, or a dive in the ocean – it needn’t be fancy bootcamps or yoga classes (unless that’s your thing – then go for it!)
Look after your body the best you can and watch as you glow from the inside out.
Put YOU first
Above all else, cultivating a beautiful glow from within is about prioritise YOU before anyone else in your life. This is not to be confused with selfishness. Far from it. This is about giving yourself the love you freely give others.
That could be in the form of a bath once a week, a daily meditation practice to relax your stress levels, or committing to a solid 7 hours sleep each night. Whatever looking after yourself means to you, make it as important a priority as your skincare regime, your healthy eating and your exercise.
Rest, do things that make you happy and spend time with people who bring you joy.
Now THAT is the secret to a beautiful life.
