Cocooned: Supple skin, break free!

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Most of us all started with soft supple skin, right? What changes?
Being out in the Australian sun, environment, food, drinking, and more!
Men in particular are guilty of being a little rough with their skin and not treating it like you would some other organs. Don’t forget, the skin is a living, breathing organ that protects your other internal organs from the world!
It’s not just men but men in general HATE doing more than the bare minimum, right? We have a solution, what if we combined a 75 minute massage with an exfoliation?
Massage as some of you may know increases circulation, detoxifies and helps the skin become suppler. But the exfoliation is where it’s at when you’re looking to break free from your hard shell of a cocoon.
Tania Dobbie, Face Plus Medispa, Master Massage Therapist and Reiki healer, explains “The body cocoon is a full body exfoliation which includes the application of a detoxifying French clay body mask, and a refreshing mini facial”.
You can read about the benefits of facial massage here
Sound good so far?
Face Plus Medispa use a range of products rich in botanical extracts and essential oils. This full body exfoliation treatment is especially beneficial during the winter months if you are suffering from rough, dehydrated and/or congested skin.
I bet you’re wondering “How often will I need to do this??” Not to worry Tania advises you only need to book in for this treatment every 3 months, so that your skin remains soft hydrated and more receptive to the application of skincare products during the season changes.
Shall we continue? After a full body exfoliation, your therapist will apply a luxurious crème body wrap. The wrap includes a blend of French clay, Australian blue cray, organic oils and botanicals.
The products will then be removed with hot towels which increases the circulation and promotes toxin removal. Finally, a botanical oil blend will be applied to soften and revitalise your skin.
There is no need to live with itchy, dry and rough skin. Simply, sacrifice 75 minutes of your time, once every three months and $200 and you won’t have to worry about exfoliating your whole body.
For those of you who use fake tan, this body treatment should also be integrated into your fake tan routine. This cocoon will allow for better application, smooth even finish and clear out blocked pores! Read more here

Manscape: Beauty routine for men

Manscaping has come a long way!

We are seeing a lot more men taking care of their appearance visiting our Face Plus Medispa clinics for a variety of laser and injectable treatments.

The most popular male treatment in our clinics is the Full Face, Laser Genesis treatment. Men love this treatment because it’s quick, easy and highly effective!

The most popular injectable treatment we see for men is Botox or otherwise known as “Brotox” for the men.
Outside of the clinical treatments there are a few easy things men can incorporate into their routine to maintain a youthful appearance.

1. Exfoliate: If you’re still that guy using the bar of soap or the same body wash for the whole body, we really need to have a chat!

If you find yourself with in grown hairs as your share, it is likely you don’t exfoliate enough. Exfoliating your skin before a shave will ensure a clean and clear finish. Read more tips on shaving here

2. Eye cream: Use an eye cream and those dark circles and puffy eyes will magically disappear. This addition will have you looking healthy, well rested and more youthful. Eye cream tips can be found here

3. Moisturise and SPF: It’s annoying having to apply so many creams in the morning right? We know this can be frustrating when you need to moisturise and apply a sunblock.

Find a cream with an SPF, a two for one! We recommend the creams available in the Ultraceuticals range:
a) SunActive SPF 50+ face & body lotion by Ultraceuticals, $59

b) Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF, Hydrating by Ultraceuticals, $79

If you’re onto into doing the bare minimum than the inclusion of the above three items will really make quite a difference to your skin.

If you’re looking to really take care of your skin there is a lot more that you can do!

4. Incorporate evening products: Believe it or not, there are products for the day and night. In the evening, it is a great time to apply an additional serum for a mask.

This is highly effective for those who feel like they have itchy or dry skin. A serum is a great addition, it won’t leave your skin sticky and you don’t need to remove it. We recommend the Ultra MD, B2Serum, $99

We break it down for all the men out there via out blog.
The sensitive types usually have redness and a few dry patches here and there. The sensitive guy’s products and routine can be found here
Tough skin? Often very dry and can even crack! Follow the tips in this blog
We also have a blog for the “no fuss guy”, he has pretty good skin and you’re thinking you might step it up a notch as you get a little older

Tough Going: Feel the feels

If there is one underlying theme I notice in ALL of my client coaching sessions, it is a resistance to vulnerability.

Namely, if we show our true emotions, specifically sadness, then we are behaving in a ‘weak’ manner.

I knew this to be true with a lot of men prior to starting my coaching practice, but what continues to take my breath away is how prevalent this belief is among women too.
That to cry, means to display weakness.

That to show our vulnerability allows for deep-seeded fears of judgement, being disliked and heaven-forbid being perceived as imperfect, rise to the surface.

Brene Brown’s vulnerability TED talk is one of the first recommended Google searches on my laptop – that is how often I have recommended my clients watch it. Because really, it says it all.

Vulnerability, and the ability to show it fully, without filters or apologies, is a strength. In a day and age where our ‘highlights reel’ is what takes up most of the online space, it is incredibly refreshing to hear when someone has a bad day – is struggling – or even jumps on their Insta-stories crying because their puppy needs surgery (me this week!).

Because it makes these people HUMAN and allows us to feel more comfortable in our own emotion too.

There is a misconception in the personal development world that in order to be your best, healthiest and happiest self, you must never feel anger, or sadness, or any of these perceived ‘negative’ emotions.

What if I told you that there is NO SUCH THING as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ emotions. That emotions just are, and what makes them good or bad is in fact how we deal with them? Do we suppress them, and not allow them to surface from fear? (Bad!) Or do we allow them to come up, feel them fully, and then move on? (Good!)

Here are some simple, healthy ways to embrace vulnerability, eradicate ‘toughness’ and soften into emotion as a normal human trait:

Admit you’re not perfect – and that is okay
A huge part of wanting to suppress emotion, and a resistance to vulnerability, is a fear of being perceived as imperfect. Well, guess what?

You’re not perfect. Neither am I. No one is. And that in itself is okay.
This striving for perfection is incredibly detrimental to our mental and emotional states, as no matter what we achieve, it will never be good enough. We live life with a lack of fulfilment, and not ever being our true selves because of a fear of not being ‘good enough’.

The first step to changing this up is to admit to yourself you are not perfect – and that no one is. And that this is okay. It is what makes you human and relatable. And THIS is what is loved most by others.
Key to Happiness? Find out here

Feel whatever emotion comes up for you FULLY for 10 minutes
The next time you feel an emotion you perceive to be ‘negative’ arise – notice how you respond. Do you instantly push it to the side and ignore it? Instead of doing this, allow yourself to feel that emotion, FULLY, for 10 minutes only. Literally, time it on your phone.

If sadness is the emotion, cry it out. Sob and wail until you are a snotty mess.
If it’s anger, scream into your pillow, or better yet, punch it (poor pillow!) Again, time it for 10 minutes.

Guess what? Chances are you will get to the 5 minute mark and be completely done. You have fully expressed your emotion and released it – and now can move on!

When we suppress our emotion, it builds up and comes back in all sorts of nasty ways – panic attacks, nervous breakdowns, snapping at our loved ones. How about just allowing ourselves to feel it for a good 10 minutes? Doesn’t sound that bad does it?

Journal
Journaling is a wonderful way of coming to terms with how you are feeling. I take to my journal whenever I feel sad, or angry, to really process WHY the emotion has come up, and get to the root of the trigger.

Once we can understand WHY something impacts us emotionally, we can work on improving or changing that situation. Our emotions are signposts telling us where to next. In journaling on them, we are able to LISTEN to these signs and determine the best action to take.
Read our tips on journaling here

Not to mention the act of getting thoughts out of your head and onto a page clears up mental space and is incredibly therapeutic (and costs nothing at all!)

Talk it out
If writing isn’t your thing, talking about your feelings with someone is another incredible way of practicing vulnerability and ‘getting it off your chest’. Be it a girlfriend, family member, therapist or coach, the act of being fully honest and vulnerable with another person is an incredible way to unleash any emotional blocks you have created – and also gain the perspective, love and support of another person.

As humans, we thrive on connection although so often we go through life suppressing our emotions and feeling alone. We don’t have to. Reach out to someone and ask for help – some will feel more comfortable with a stranger, others with a loved one. Find what works for you and make it a habit.

How do you practice vulnerability in your life?

Vain about veins: Heat and destroy

Say “Goodbye” to unsightly veins!

Nd Yag is the laser treatment we offer at Face Plus Medispa to treat the following veins:
Telangiectasia

Reticular veins

Cherry or spider angina veins

Telangiectasia: Also known as, spider veins are a condition which widens tiny blood vessels causing thread like red lines or patterns in the skin. Spider veins form on the face and body and are not life-threatening, but it may be sign of a serious illness.

The exact cause of telangiectasia is not known. Researchers believe there could be several causes that contribute including, genetic, environmental or a combination of both.

Studies have shown the Nd Yag laser constitutes a fast, safe and efficient therapeutic modality for the treatment of Telangiectasia.

Reticular veins: Also known as blue veins or feeder veins, are smaller than a varicose vein but can have a ropy appearance. The most common cause of reticular veins weak or damaged small valves in the vein. Blood backs up in the veins, causing tiny veins on the skins surface to dilate and become visible.

Contributing factors include genetics, age, weight, hormonal changes, pregnancy, long periods of standing or sitting and climate. Australians experience greater sun exposure and are more prone to reticular veins.

These veins do not bulge and mainly appear on the back of the leg and most commonly around the knee. Reticular veins can only be treated with Nd Yag if they are attached to the Telangiectasia vein (spider). To be able to treat the reticular vein it must be no larger than 3.5mm in size.

Cherry angiomas veins: are “cherry red” small domes, made up of a cluster of capillaries that most often grow on the torso, arms, legs and shoulders.

They are most commonly found on people aged 30 and older, with one studying noting that 75% of people over the age of 75 years of age have them.
The exact cause is unknown but they have been linked to pregnancy, exposure to chemicals, medical conditions and climate.

Other than for cosmetic reasons they are often removed on areas that are easily bumped, as bleeding can occur is the angioma is scratched, rubbed or cut open.

Immediately following an Nd Yag your Laser Specialist will be looking for one of three indicators of a successful treatment:
1. The vein will dissipate
2. The vein will darken, this darkening can take up to 2 weeks to fade
3. The vein will go blue or grey
Nd Yag is a proven and safe laser to treat these types of unsightly veins.

A minimum of three treatments are required to see a permanent result.

If these types of veins are left untreated they may grow in size.

We care about the flare: Make up for sensitised skin

Mineral make up should be your first choice with its many benefits for your skin.

Make up application does not have to be a scary “test and see how you go” experience if you suffer from sensitised and inflamed skin conditions including thread, spider or cherry veins.

Anyone with serious skin concerns we recommend the mineral make up range by Jane Iredale.

Anyone can be allergic or sensitive to a variety of ingredients found in makeup. Jane Iredale have removed the top three sensitisers from their makeup range; synthetic fragrance, petroleum and synthetic preservatives.

Jane Iredale tested each and every product for sensitivity on a 50-person test panel in a laboratory. Individuals with extreme chemical sensitivities wear able to wear the makeup successfully.

Often those with inflamed skin conditions find that powder makeup is drying BUT Jane Iredale’s minerals are actually the opposite! The minerals trap the moisture between the skin and the particle layer. Powders containing a high percentage of talc in the formula can have this effect.

Whilst the foundation forms a protective barrier on the skin whilst still allowing it to breathe and function normally.

The tests performed confirms that all of the products in this range are non-comedogenic and do not block your pores.

The minerals are concentrated pigment, camouflage can be fast and easy, especially when covering up any type of redness or erythema.

Jane Iredale make up will not only cover redness, but the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are known to help soothe the skin.

The minerals inside the products have been tested and show that there are no nano-sized minerals in any of the products.

Watch our in house makeup artist Rowena apply the Jane Iredale makeup range on a patient with acne prone skin here

Hose it down: Causes of inflammation

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Hose it down: Causes of inflammation

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Even though the cause of Telangiectasia, spider veins, reticular veins or cherry angina veins are not known, it is seen to be connected to inflammation in the body.
Here are a few ways to manage the development of some of the above-mentioned veins:
1. Exercise
Exercise is one of the best things you can do to improve your blood flow and lower inflammation.
When you are in one position for too long, it is more difficult for your veins to pump blood efficiently to your heart.
Low impact exercises are ideal such as walking, swimming and bicycling.
2. Maintain a healthy weight
Carrying excess body weight puts additional pressure on your veins and can contribute to inflammation. This is often why these veins appear during pregnancy.
If the patient is overweight, veins would be difficult to treat with Nd Yag.
3. Anti-inflammatory diet
Your diet can help reverse inflammation and improve the blood flow in your body and possibly heal the veins faster and prevent future ones from forming.
A bad diet including trans fats, sugar, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods all contribute to the damage of veins, low circulation, blood pressure problems, hormonal imbalances and weight gain.
Another food group that should be avoided are those high in sodium, they are dehydrating and contain toxins that can make the inflammation in these veins worse!
Anti-inflammatory foods include:
High fiber foods – Fiber will help improve your heart health and digestive functions.
High antioxidant foods – Green vegetables and citrus fruits contain vitamin C & E, help strengthen veins, fight inflammation and improve arterial health.
Apple cider vinegar – we love this stuff and it is great for consumption and ingestion! It will improve circulation in the vein walls and it is an effective anti-inflammatory. Read more via our blog dedicated to this liquid gold
4. Turn off the heat
Heat increases swelling, it expands or dilates the vessels.
If you wish to lessen and prevent, it is important to avoid or minimize your exposure to any of the following sources of heat:
– Hot shower or bath, they can add to your symptoms
– Don’t sit too close to a heat source or even a hot room
– Hot weather adds to the development of some of these veins
– Hot water bottles, wheat bags and heat packs negatively impact the veins in the area of application.
Heat of course is not the sole factor in the cause and preventions of these veins, however,  it is a significant contributor!
5. Stress less
Stress can impact your body in so many ways! Read our tips on minimising stress here

Spot-less: Reduce skin discolouration

Sun damage is one of the most common problems treated at Face Plus.

Pigmentation is caused by sun exposure and specifically the UVA rays which penetrate your skin on a deeper level and cause ageing.

UVA’s stimulate pigment cells called melanocytes to create pigment called melanin. Melanin is responsible for your tan and also unwanted pigmentation.

They don’t appear overnight; these sun spots can take up to 10-20 years to develop.
Triggers for pigmentation in young women can also be the pill (contraception) and pregnancy, which alters your hormone levels. In combination with exposure to the sun this can results in dark spots, often on the upper lip and forehead.

Pigmentation can appear all over the body, any part that is exposed to the sun; face, décolletage, hands, back and shoulders.

There are a number of facials and treatments available to treat pigmentation. Depending on the type of pigmentation skin peels or laser treatments may be suggested. You can read further about the peels available here.

This blog we are focusing on the laser treatment called Limelight IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). This device was invented to combat age spots, skin redness, small veins and sun damage. IPL provides dramatic results for sun damaged skin.

Limelight is perfect for any part of the face, neck, décolletage and hands with redness, small veins or dark spots. Light brown spots that may have been difficult to resolve in the past, respond well to this treatment.

There are varying programs to customise the treatment to your skin type and type of pigmentation.

Depending on the area that is being treated it should take less than one hour. Results can be seen following one to six treatments. Conditions such as rosacea would take six treatments with regular follow up treatment. Limelight IPL treatments are spaced one month apart.

Immediately following the Limelight IPL treatment, the spots will darken, your skin may appear slightly red, be mildly swollen and this will last for a few hours or possibly a day or longer. You can always apply makeup to cover up any redness that may be visible. Within one to three weeks, the darkened spots will flake off and fade.

Redness or small veins will decrease and the mottled look of complexion will improve.

Prior to receiving your Limelight IPL treatment your Dermal Therapist must perform a patch test; a full treatment appointment can be made 48 hours following your patch test if you have not experienced any side effects.

Clients always ask if this is a permanent solution, it can be if proper care is taken. New spots and redness may appear with new sun exposure and damage.
The best care and prevention is to protect your skin from the sun. Read our sun safe tips here.
