Highbrow: Low Brow LIFT

Droopy or sagging eyebrows are also known as brow ptosis.

This is when the eyebrow is sagging, causing heaviness or fullness in the area between the eyebrow and the eye.

In a male, the brows are usually located just above the bony rim of the orbit and in females the out half of the brows usually sits about 1cm above the rim of the orbital bone.

Brow ptosis is caused mainly due to aging. The skin around the eyes and of course the face becomes thinner as we age, leading to sagging.

When fat under the skin is lost this causes further sagging, especially in the eyebrow area.
It is also a hereditary feature, if you see your parents have this feature, it is likely it will occur in your brows as you age.
Drooping and sagging eyebrows can make you appear significantly older than you are or even tired.

There are surgical options to correct this feature if it is seriously impacting your vision or your health. Cosmetically, if you are starting to see the brows dropping, this can be easily and quickly corrected with muscle relaxants such as Botox & Dysport.

Some see the brows beginning to drop in their early to mid 20’s, often at this age it is too early to consider going under the knife and many opt for a non surgical, injectable brow lift.

How does it work?
Using a muscle relaxant listed above, certain muscles are relaxed around the eyes to create an overall lift in the brows.

There are muscles around the eye that hold the eyebrows down, those muscles are known as orbicularis oculi.
The injectable treatment into these muscles allow the eyebrows to be released from the downward pull and the muscles in the forehead will automatically lift the eyebrows up without being antagonised.

Patients will usually see a few millimetres in height difference, seems like a small amount but it’s quite a lot for such a small area.

Another technique commonly used is the liquid lift. This technique uses a dermal filler, same as you would in your lips, cheek or chin, under the eyebrow, to support the eyebrow and elevate the brows up.

The filler also works to soften the bony orbital rim around the brows, creating a softer more youthful appearance.

High Roller: Manage party season and your needs

It’s here. Party season is upon us.

We have the Spring Carnival, warmer summer nights inevitably leading to more social evenings, and Christmas and New Year a stone’s throw away.

And while it can be tempting to dive headfirst into each and every outing, it’s important we take a small step back and make sure we are on top of our health – mind, body and soul – to ensure we can last the distance, rather than crashing and burning after our first month of events.

Here are our top wellness tips to ensure smooth sailing into party season – covering everything from hangovers, to avoiding burnout, to your beauty regime and ensuring that ‘summer glow’.

SCHEDULE REST
If you know you have a big week or month ahead, it is so important you schedule time for rest. In fact, make rest just as important a priority as exercise and eating well – especially if you plan on drinking or staying out late.

Sleep is key to optimum wellbeing, and can alleviate stress levels, help with weight loss and even prevent wrinkles! If you know you are going to have a late one, or that you may be getting less shut-eye than you would like, be sure to make time each day for some down time. That could be a nap on the couch in the afternoon, a Sunday sleep in, or even 30 minutes with a tea and a good book.

Whatever ensures you are truly ‘switched off’ – prioritise it every day, to ensure you can keep your energy levels high when you head on out! 

BEAUTY FROM WITHIN 
We are all seeking that summer glow, especially during party season. There is nothing worse than a breakout or challenging skin right before a wedding or other big social event. Be sure to take extra care of your skin – it is your largest organ after all!

Keep it hydrated by drinking plenty of water (especially if you plan on drinking alcohol) and load up on organic whole foods: fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds and healthy fats like coconut oil or olive oil. Add in a sustainable piece of protein, and you have yourself a rounded meal that will leave your skin glowing from the inside out.

PLAN AHEAD
Rather than leaving things to the last minute and risking a stress attack, ensure you have a good idea when it comes to transport to and from events, and what the dress code is (if you are attending a wedding).

These little bits of information may not seem like a big deal in the lead up, but you can thank us later when you find yourself stranded in a country town at 1am with no Ubers in site and blisters all over your feet.
(Speaking of, take bandaids everywhere. And those gel cushions for your feet. Months of no heels will have you limping after an hour if you don’t plan in advance!) 

IF IT’S NOT A HELL YES, IT’S A NO
Chances are you are going to be inundated in the lead up to Christmas with events – work events, friend’s weddings and birthdays, and general social outings. That is all well and good, especially if you take our advice above, but it is so important to only say ‘yes’ to attending the events you truly want to.

All too often we say yes out of obligation, and then are left feeling drained, lethargic and resenting the event that we really should have said no to in the first place. Saying no doesn’t make you a bad person – especially if your energy is running low.

Remember whenever you get invited somewhere – if it’s not a ‘Hell yes!’ in your mind, the answer is a no.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT…AND DRINK
Party season goes hand in hand with eating, drinking and being merry – which is fine, when in moderation and balance. If you are a conscious drinker, stick to the one beverage, preferably something that will still keep you hydrated, and with low sugar intake – vodka, lime and sodas are the perfect option.

Be sure to keep up your water intake even if you plan on a big night. This will keep your body hydrated, and also ward of a hangover the next day.

Eat a big healthy meal before any outing, especially if you are not sure about the catering situation. That being said, there’s no need to be super regimented. If you want the canapés, go for it! We do far more damage to ourselves feeling guilty about the foods we are eating, than actually eating the food itself.

Listen to your body and what it wants. If that’s pizza and a cocktail, enjoy every mouthful.
