Two birds, one stone: Sweat & Frown less

So many things to love about Australia but the summers are what makes you fall madly, deeply in love.

There is a downside to summer, the sweating and the extra wrinkles that always appear! Those extra lines are due to damage and aging caused by the sun. We often squint when out in the sun, causing crows feet and of course a large majority of us either sweat off our sunscreen or never wear enough!

Read about the importance of sun protection here.

How do muscle relaxants such as Botox & Dysport assist sweating?

Muscle Relaxants such as Botox & Dysport are injected into the skin to treat symptoms if sever seating in areas such as the underarms, palms and forehead when medicines used on the skin topically do not work well enough.

Botox completed a clinical study on 104 patients suffering from severe underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis). 84 (81%)out of the 104 patients who were treated with Botox achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating.

Whilst it may vary from individual to individual, following just one treatment you will experience drier underarms or palms for up to 6 months.

Particularly for the underarms, you nurse injector will make 10 to 15 injections into the area through a very fine needle.  A significant reduction in underarm sweating should be visible within 4 weeks of your first treatment.

The same theory applies to any other area you might receive muscle relaxants such as the forehead. Approximately, 4 weeks following your Botox or Dysport treatment in your forehead you will notice your forehead will not be beading with sweat!

It has also been found that use of muscle relaxants on the forehead improves skin! Why? Because you don’t sweat as much!

You are an ideal candidate for this treatment if you relate to any of the following statements:
I change my clothes more than twice a day due to my sweating.
I carry supplied such as extra clothes, antiperspirants, powers or towels to help manage the symptoms of my excessive sweating,
I use prescription antiperspirants, powders or deodorants to control my sweating.
I spend more than 3 hours a day dealing with my under arm sweat.
The sweating interferes with my daily activities.

The fine line: Greasy VS Dewy

Is it just us or do we constantly battle between maintaining a healthy, dewy glow without looking greasy and overly shiny?

This is a battle fought both during summer and beyond!
Oily skin is especially more difficult because you can go from radiant to greasy in one hot second! Follow some of our easy tips to keep that oil production at bay while allowing your natural dewiness to shine through!

Prep work
Start with a smooth clean canvas. Be sure not to start with oily skin straight away. Make sure you have a suitable skincare regime in place to create a healthy balanced canvas.
Exfoliating is also key, why and how can be found via our “Turn Over” blog.
You want to add the glow and dew with your makeup.

Don’t reach for the powder straight away. Whilst it definitely reduces shine in certain areas, powder can take the mattifying too far, to the point where it can look a little too flat. Rather than setting your foundation and concealer with powder, apply a small amount of mattifying or silicone based primer to your shine prone areas – T-zone. Our primer recommendations can be found here.

Misty mist
Use a setting mist to ensure your makeup stay flawless all day long. Our favourite spray is the POMMIST Hydration Spray by Jane Iredale, $49

Containing no nasties, it helps conceal pores, fine lines and boosts SPF!

When it gets sweaty the last thing you want is glitter stuck to your skin. Shimmer, sparkles, glitter and all things shiny work against your dewy goals. Unfortunately the sparkles tend to draw more attention to the fact that you may be greasy. Reach for a subtle highlighter that will subtly illuminate.

Pack it
If you have a bag big enough, it’s always a good idea to pack a few tools that you may need to touch up throughout the day.

The facial mist will come in handy, you may also want to pack blotting sheets.
Try to avoid powdering throughout the day, unless you really need it.
OR avoid makeup altogether, stick to a great tinted sun block and book yourself in for some Laser Genesis, the laser facial treatment that will give you the confidence to go makeup free. Read how here.
Come and get us sweaty summer days and nights!

Confidence: Being summer (body) ready

Summer Ready!

With Summer on our doorsteps, one of the first talking points in many women is their ‘summer body’ and how they have been slaving at the gym, or prepping meals like never before, to get themselves in shape for Summer.

While the notion has some merit, given Summer does imply less clothes and more bikinis, it also perpetuates the idea that your body, as it is, is not enough for Summer – regardless of how you look, how much you weigh or how often you train.

In my eyes, being Summer ready is less about how you physically look, and more about how you FEEL! What are the feelings you are trying to cultivate in aiming for a ‘Summer body’? Is it confidence? Self-worth? Value?

Know that, right now, you have the ability to feel these things REGARDLESS of what you look like in a bikini or how many likes your beach-pose selfie gets.
Here are some top tips to cultivate a beautiful Summer

FEELING in your body:
Smiling is the quickest, easiest way to send feel good endorphins to our minds, creating feelings of genuine happiness and love. And who doesn’t want more of those in their life? Practice making a conscious effort to smile every single day. Try it as you are driving, showering, looking in the mirror. Yes, you may feel uncomfortable at first, but you will also start to notice that feel-good rush is so easy to come by.

As the saying goes, the sexiest curve on a woman is her smile. Own it!

Now is the time to treat yourself, and your wardrobe, to something that makes you feel good, sexy even! Be it a beautiful new bikini, a summer dress, or a pair of gorgeous heels – invest in a piece of clothing that you will really love wearing, and that makes you feel all of those feels you are seeking – confident, sexy and light! Often we wait for an occasion to splurge on ourselves, but really – there’s no time like the present! If it makes you feel good, (and you have saved the money) then go for it!

Consider switching to natural beauty – and this doesn’t just mean toning down the makeup in the warmer months. Our skin is our largest organ, absorbing more than 60% of what we put on it straight into the blood stream. With that in mind, mainstream beauty products are FULL of carcinogens, endocrine-disruptors and chemicals. Make the switch to natural beauty products and your skin will be glowing like Summer in no time. Check out the Depths of Beauty blog for tips on making the switch. Read our blog “We care about that flare: Make up for sensitised skin”.

What truly makes your body feel good? Is it a warm candlelit bath with essential oils? Maybe a massage or a facial or a reiki session? Coming into the Summer months, it is easy to forget our pampering rituals, however there really is no better time! Cultivate self love by investing own what makes you FEEL good – and you will surely shine from the inside out. Read More About Reiki Massage here.

Nudie Rudie: Plan a makeup free summer!

When summer rolls around your goals is usually to try and wear less makeup given that it melts off soon after.

The key to a makeup free look all boils down to the health and quality of the skin.

Laser Genesis is the answer! Before you roll your eyes and say you can’t have laser during summer, well this one you can!

Laser Genesis is a treatment that can be performed on almost all skin types, age groups, gender and anytime of the year.

Laser Genesis is an innovative and technologically advanced laser that promotes glowing and healthy-looking skin.

Laser Genesis targets skin concerns and conditions that are associated with premature signs of aging and sun damage, something we see a lot in our patients due to our climate.

Excessive redness, large pores, uneven skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles can be target by this laser treatment.
Scientifically proven to produce new collagen the Laser Genesis treatment is a non-invasive laser technology that safely and discreetly and of course effectively treats fine line and wrinkles, diffuse and reduce excessive redness and minuses pore size, uneven skin texture and scars.

Laser Genesis works by gently heating the upper dermis which is located below the skin’s surface, stimulating collagen regrowth. Additional heat is generated in dilated capillaries to reduce redness.

As the dermis is gently heated, fine structures such as the microvascular are targeted and ultimately type 1 collagen is formed with cross-linking fibres. No gel or anaesthesia is required. A Laser Genesis treatment is usually described as relaxing a therapeutic.
We recommend a total of 6 treatments four weeks apart but following your first treatment you can expect to see subtle yet consistent results after each treatment.

At Face Plus Medispa we often combine a Laser Genesis treatment with the Face Plus Signature Enzyme Facial or an LED light for optimum results.

On guard: Non-Tinted Skin protection

The sun is incredibly harmful to the skin.

Repeated and ongoing exposure ultraviolet light (UV radiation) from the sun accounts for almost 90% of Symptoms of premature skin ageing, skin damage and skin cancer.

The sun us a carcinogenic and harmful to the skin. Just a few minutes of sun exposure in Australia, each day over the years can cause noticeable changes to your skin.
As you age and spend more time in the skin, it loses the ability to repair itself and the damage will continue. Studies have shown that repeated exposure to UV breakdown collagen and impairs the development of new collagen.

Elastic is not safe from the sun either! You will find that skin weakened from sun exposure does not snap back compared to skin on your body that is protected from the sun. The combination of collagen and elasticity loss leads to skin becoming loses, wrinkles, and leathery much earlier with un protected exposure to sunlight.
Every man, woman or child must make the conscious effort to protect their skin.

There are all kinds of sunblock’s available on the market and we won’t explain the difference between all of them here, check out our detailed blog on various sunscreens here.

For complete protection from the sun Face Plus Medispa are HUGE advocated of ZINC based sun blocks. But it is difficult to find a zinc based sunblock that isn’t thick, heavy and makes you look like you’re about to play a round of 20/20 cricket!

HydroPeptide are leaders in antiaging skincare and they have created two zinc based sun blocks to protect our skin from premature aging.
The Solar Defense Tinted Face Guard, By HydroPeptide self-adjusts to match the colour of your skin tone whilst protecting and moisturising the skin, you can read more here.
Solar Defense Tinted Face Guard, By HydroPeptide, $79

Also on offer is the Solar Defense Non-Tinted Face Guard offering the same antiaging benefits without the tint.
Solar Defense Non-Tinted Face Guard, By HydroPeptide, $79

Both the tinted and non-tinted are advanced skin defending moisturisers, protecting the skin with a potent combination of physical blockers, thermos thermophiles and green tea extracts.

The formula features:
– Help to protect against free radical damage that lead to fine lines and wrinkles
– Replenishes hydration without feeling heavy on the skin
– Helps promote a clear complexion
The sun is certainly not getting weaker and we are now more than ever so aware of the damage the sun can do to our skin. It’s time to be safer and smarter about our skincare!

Heated Conditions: How to store makeup in summer

In Australia we spend an average of $8 billion a year on beauty and an additional $10.5 billion on personal care.

Given such statistics it’s good to know how to best store all of your precious beauty and “personal care” items.
Heatwave conditions in Australia are very common, you may have experienced thickened nail polish, dried out mascara, thinning hand cream and two-toned foundation. These are all signs your items could be suffering in heatwave conditions too!

Producers of such products do test the stability of the goods under temperatures up to 54’C so that the product is safe and isn’t compromised BUT the products cannot be protected against UV light exposure which can compromise certain ingredients inside the product.

Here are some of our summer makeup storage tips –
1. Check the use by date: There should be a symbol on all beauty products that looks like a jar with an open lid. The “M” on the symbol represents months and the number following that represents the number of months. This must be adhered to once the product has been opened.

2. Keep perfume in the shade: Oils and alcohols in perfume don’t do well in heat and light. Don’t rush and pop the perfume in the fridge as it also doesn’t do well in extreme temperature fluctuations. The best thing to do is to keep it in a cool, dry and shaded area.

3. Store creams fridge: Ingredients inside the cream can become inactive if left in hot conditions. Added bonus of popping the eye cream in the fridge is upon application the cooling effects acts as an anti-inflammatory!

4. Don’t pump your mascara wand: The pumping action fills the tube up of oxygen which shortens the life of your mascara by drying out.

5. Makeup belongs in room temperature: Makeup hasn’t been tested for extremely cold temperatures. It’s best to keep it in a shaded area that is out of direct sunlight. Nail polish is best kept at room temperature also, if you so store it in the fridge you must wait for it to return to room temperature before applying the polish. The refrigeration does assist in prolonging the shelf life of a nail polish.

6. Refrigerate natural products: If a beauty products main ingredient is edible, you should always keep it in the refrigerator so it won’t go off.

Planning: When you fail to plan, you plan to fail

You’ve all heard the quote: when you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Planning, while tedious at times, is a must if you truly want to succeed – be it in a new lifestyle approach with food or exercise, calling in a new job, or even purchasing a new home or jet setting around the world.

Without a plan in place as to HOW you will approach these tasks, you can often feel like you are running blind. And that’s when stress builds up.
So, what is your planning style and how can you make it FUN?

The list-maker
My personal planning style of choice, lists are an easy, organised way to stay on top of things. Be it a ‘to do’ list for your daily working tasks (categorised from most important task to least important task if you are super on top of it), a shopping list so you don’t miss all the new healthy foods for your meal prep, or a weekly list of life-admin tasks to complete – lists ensure you capture all those ‘to dos’ running wild in your mind, by putting them on a piece of paper, or the notes in your phone, (or both) so you know there is no way you will forget anything.

It’s about ‘getting out of your head and onto the page’ – and the satisfaction that comes with ticking off a list is second to none!

The visionary
For those of you who are more visual-oriented. The visionary plans goals out by literally visualising what the end result will be – be it a dream holiday destination, home or picture of health. Once you SEE it right in front of you, you are able top get to work.

This is where vision boarding can be extremely helpful – as it gives you a starting point to jot down your plans of action working back from the end result. Pinterest is a great online platform for those of us seeking a visual medium for our planning – or you can go totally old school and attack old magazines with scissors, sticking your goals on a cork board.
Check out on blog on goal setting here.

The numbers-gal
Where are my spread sheet lovers at? The numbers-planners LOVE all things budgets, equations and Excel. These planners enjoy sitting down at the beginning of the month and allocating where their money, and energy, will go. Driven by clean sums, and striving for a green tick at the end of the month, numbers planners are operationally driven and see things as black or white (not often space for the in betweens).

This is all about categorising and being straight to the point. Numbers planners make great Chief Operations Officers by the way.

The strategic mind
Strategic thinkers like to dabble in a little of all of the above – the lists, the numbers and the vision – creating a giant capture-all of planning. They are also partial to the odd pie-graph or chart, and are happy to analyse the HOW’s of things: exactly HOW are you going to lose those 5 kilos, or HOW are you going to make the exact amount of money to fund that next investment?

The key to this level of planning is breaking the giant tasks down into bite-sized chunks and chipping away at them, one at a time.

The stationery fiend
Then, there’s those of us who love Kikki K, and will stock up on their latest stationery haul just to keep up to date with the latest planning trends.

Your desk is probably filled with printed calendars, different types of to dos lists, post it notes and a hand-held diary and note book, rather than working out of your phone. Because sometimes, technology just doesn’t do the job.
Read our blog on transitioning through change here.

You may be one of the above, or perhaps ALL of the above at times – regardless, remember that planning is a KEY component to living your best life without the stress or angst that comes with forgetting what it is you are working towards.

What’s your planning style?

Chin chin: Remove your double chin permanently

New chin sculpting treatment Belkyra is now available.

Khloe Kardashian made this chin fat dissolving and sculpting treatment famous in America and after much in clinic testing, Belkyra is now available at Face Plus Medispa.

We’ve read a number of studies and reviews and we will begin by saying this treatment works! Secondly, there is downtime involved with this treatment, if you’ve heard there is no downtime, that means the treatment they are providing is not effective.

The producers of this product have advised Face Plus that you want the reaction of swelling and growth immediately following the treatment, the swelling will last for a few days and may be sensitive to touch.

For those who are uncomfortable with a double chin or pocket of fat around the jaw line this is a treatment for you.

Belkyra contains a synthesised deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a compound that is naturally in the body, aiding in digestion and absorption of fats.

Belkyra offers a non-surgical option that is carried out with a series of injections to the double chin and jawline area. The number of treatments required will depend on the patient and how much excess fat and skin they have in this area.

A minimum of two treatments are required to see results.
Prior to treatment the client will undergo a thorough consultation process with our of our experienced nurses, you can read about our consultation process here.

Once a script has been approved by a Doctor on site or via video your nurse will begin the treatment by numbing the area. The treatment itself will take between 20 to 40 minutes depending on the total number of injection points required.

When injected the compound breaks down the fat cells which the body eliminates, the other bonus? Skin is tightened. From the clinical trials conducted by Face Plus Medispa a minimum of 3 treatments were required for results with some patients needing up to 6 treatments four weeks apart to achieve their goals.

Results following three treatments.

Downtime, regardless of what you have read on the internet and heard from anyone, there is downtime and you want it! Following the treatment there will be some swelling, this is one of those treatments where you think your chin might be getting worse before it gets better.

The swollen effect following the treatment means the product is working and doing its thing.

The more swelling present following the treatment, the better! So, embrace and welcome to swell. It will be sensitive to touch at first and some clients advised a slight hardening of the area, this is normal too.

The swelling will last for a few days, so if this is something you think you might be conscious about, plan your social engagements around this or wear a scarf!

Watch the treatment process and results via our Instagram page.

The treatment starts at $2,500, this cost is inclusive of the first two mandatory treatments required.

If fat under the double chin is not your concern and just a bit of excess skin due to aging, we can highly recommend our skin tightening treatment, TITAN, read more here.
Watch TITAN in action via our Instagram page.

If you’re not interested in the long treatment plan, Dr William Mooney offers liposuction for this area. You can read more and see the wonderful results here.

Wax on wax off: Jojoba Peeling Cream

Jojoba oil shares the same molecular structure as the sebum found in our skin.

Containing soft spheres of jojoba wax, The Jojoba Peeling Cream by Dr Spiller provides an instantly softening and clarified skin.

Exfoliating is an integral part of skin care, read why here.

The Jojoba Peeling cream is an exfoliant that is suitable for all skin types. May even be used on sensitised skin conditions.
A creamy formula instantly removes dead skin and clogging residue. Microbeads sliding effortlessly unclogs and decongests pores.

The skin will not be scratched or abraded during exfoliation thanks to the spherical jojoba beads.

Key ingredient, jojoba wax beads remove the skin debris and dulling residue for a re-texturised effect. Jojoba wax beads gently degrade with heat and friction.

The peeling cream contains essential fatty alcohols a barrier protective emollient rich in biomimetic fatty alcohols.

Essential fatty acids are present and are also barrier protective emollients rich in biomimetic fatty acids.
Jojoba Peeling Cream by Dr Spiller, $68

Depending on your skin type, exfoliate once or twice a week. To use the Jojoba Peeling Cream by Dr Spiller a pearl-sized amount is required for the face, neck and décolletage.

When cleansing and exfoliating your face it is important to always use lukewarm water on the face as hot water can aggravate the skin.

The strength of the exfoliation will depend on the pressure you apply to the skin. If you have fairly rough and tough skin apply more pressure when using circular motions. For a milder exfoliation use a very light circular movement.

Over exfoliation can strip the acid mantle and the skin’s protective mechanism.
For an even deeper and thorough exfoliation try the Anti-Wrinkle, Polish and Plump Peel by HydroPeptide, read more here.  Some describe this two-step system as a dermabrasion you can perform in the comfort of your own home. These are the two products you will use if you are looking for glowing, smooth skin instantly.
