Man up & take better care of your skin

Man up & take better care of your skin

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Many men shy away at the idea of indulging in a facial. The experience can seem a bit too feminine focused. However, at Face Plus we liken the experience to a massage for your face or a workout for your skin. The purpose is to create a result, rather than just a relaxing time.
Men’s skin is naturally a bit thicker than women’s. Men subject their face to shaving routines, stubble and beard growth. Unlike women who are more conscious about their skincare and makeup regime, men wear little to no product on their face. Many men even admit to forgetting to apply sunscreen. They are therefore more likely to be subjected to the harsh rays of the sun and show signs of sun damage. Men are also less inclined to focus on their at home skincare products. Many men admit to using hand soap or body wash to clean their face. These harsh chemicals can cause an oil imbalance of your skin.
Men therefore are prone to the following issues: coarser skin, larger pores, breakouts and an increased chance of sun damage. This list alone warrants some one on one time with a Face Plus dermal therapist.
Although our entire treatment list at Face Plus is perfectly suited for men, a great entry level treatment that would benefit any man’s skin is our signature Enzyme Facial. The Face Plus Enzyme Facials are a safe and effective natural way to facilitate exfoliation, help overall biological processes in the skin that have slowed down due to age or sun damage and to inhibit free-radical damage. The Enzyme Facials accelerate biochemical reactions in a cell that would proceed minimally or not at all if the enzymes were not present.
The Key Ingredients in the Enzyme Facial include:
Spelt: A protein rich grain abundant in biomimetic leucine, phenylalanine, threonine, lysine and valine amino acids. Replicates NMF (Natural Moisturising Factor), Vitamin B6, zinc, magnesium and iron.
Kaolinite: A drawing mineral clay rich in aluminium silicates that absorb excess sebum production.
Wheat protein: Rich in serine, alanine, glycine, aspartic acid, threonine, leucine, lysine, valine, arginine, histadine, phenylalanine, glutamic acid and proline found in NMF.
Lactose: A biomimetic disaccharide found naturally in glycosaminoglycans.
The exfoliating enzymes are activated by steam and only target dead keratinised protein.
For men this facial offers an incredible deep pore cleanse. Men naturally produce more oil in their skin than women as they have higher testosterone levels. When male pores aren’t cleaned properly, the oil will clog the pores and can lead to the formation of blackheads and pimples. During your enzyme facial, your Face Plus dermal therapist will assess the state of your skin and will perform extractions after steaming your face, if necessary. An extraction is a very precise removal of oil and dirt that’s clogging any open pores.
The best part about the signature Enzyme Facial, is that it is appropriate for all skin types. If you suffer from dry and flaky skin, the facial will help restore moisture and leave your skin feeling hydrated. If you suffer congestion or an oily T Zone, the facial will help to decrease your shine, shrink your pores and exfoliate your skin.
After your Signature Enzyme Facial you can expect a no downtime result to great, glowing skin. Many men comment on how much smoother their shave feels post facial.  Constant shaving can cause irritations to the skin in the form of inflammation and micro wounds. A facial with help to deep clean the area and soothe the irritated skin resulting in a smoother and less painful shave.
Whether you have an occasion coming up or just notice your skin feeling a bit congested, a Face Plus Enzyme facial is a core treatment to ensure your skin is operating at its peak performance level.

Dr. Spiller Cleansing Milk & Toner with Cucumber Extracts

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Dr. Spiller Cleansing Milk & Toner with Cucumber Extracts

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
When I first tried the Dr. Spiller Cleansing Milk, I assumed it was a light weight moisturiser. The milky formula and smooth texture was a far cry from your typical clear and soapy smelling face wash. It was this simple visual and textural difference that made me so intrigued to try this product.
Often, I find face washes to be a bit too harsh on my sensitive skin. The pH in the Dr. Spiller Cucumber Milk is sensitive skin friendly and does not strip of irritate the skin. The pleasant and mild cucumber extract is rich in antioxidant avonoids, polyphenols, potassium, magnesium and vitamins A, C and E. The Cucumber extract also helps to reduce the appearance of redness and lessens the appearance of pigmentation. As far as face washes go, this Dr. Spiller range does far more than cleanse your skin. It’s non-drying creamy formula purifies, revitalises and lightens your complexion making it the perfect cleanser for those that suffer from breakouts, congestion and open pores; in other words suitable for oily/ combination skin.
The Dr. Spiller Cleansing Milk is designed to be used in harmony with the Dr. Spiller Cucumber Toner.
It has long been asked, why we actually need to use a toner in our skincare regime. Toner was originally created as an extra cleansing step to remove dirt and impurities from makeup and environmental pollution. While Face Plus often recommends double cleansing your face (particularly if you have been wearing a lot of makeup during the day) this can also result in an imbalance in your pH levels. Toners are specifically designed to restore this balance to your skin to keep your skin from becoming too dry or oily and you cleanse your face. A toner will also help to tighten your pores to help make your skin visibly smoother.
When choosing a toner, it is important to opt for one that is hydrating. The Dr. Spiller Cucumber Toner contains lactic acid which is a biomimetic NMF to bind moisture for increased hydration. The Cucumber Toner, like it’s Cleansing counterpart is a skin friendly, non-sticky formula that feels lightweight and effortless on the skin. Our dermal therapist Jodie, recommends replacing your cotton pad with some gauze when applying toner. This way you maximise the product on your face and don’t loose as much to the absorption on the cotton pad.
The Dr. Spiller Cucumber Milk Cleanser and Toner are skin care essentials to help you on your way to clear and glowing skin. Keep the two in your bathroom and encourage your partner to incorporate it into his morning and night skincare regime. The calming cucumber smell will have them hooked after the first use.

Couple Goals: …those that Skincare together

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Couple Goals: …those that Skincare together

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Mornings are always a bit too rushed…especially during the weekday, however, night times give couples a great opportunity to engage in some feel-good beauty routines. Lately, I have been seeing a lot more men on social media try at home scrubs and sheet masks…usually to the great amusement and encouragement of their significant others. At home skin care is a cost-effective bonding experience for you and your partner. Here are some tips to start incorporating the man in your life into your night time beauty routine.

  1. Think about the both of you

When I first started painting my partners face with face masks, I was considerate of that fact he might not appreciate my rose scented, pink clay mask. I wanted to ease him into my wonderful beauty world, so started with exfoliating face scrubs and mineral clay masks that looked like camouflage face paint.  The aim is to have fun together not isolate and overwhelm your partner. (aka. Don’t snapchat him on the couch wearing a facemask)

  1. Take a shower or bath together

There’s nothing nicer in Winter than a hot shower or warm bath. It’s even better to do this activity together (not all the time, but once a week it can be a really nice intimate way of spending time together). Go the extra mile and light some scented candles. If you’re having a bath add some Epsom salt to relax your muscles and a few drops of lavender oil to set the calming mood. If you’re having a shower, use exfoliating mitts and a good quality body scrub. The result is smoother skin and a free massage. Talk about winning.

  1. Give your partner a DIY facial

After a stressful work day, there is nothing nicer than having your face gently massaged and cleansed for you. While you’re watching your favourite show or about to hit the hay, rest your partners head in your lap and cleanse, tone and moisturise their face. Make sure to have clean hands and use the same amount of product as you would on yourself. It’s easy to get a little carried away and use too much facial oil, however, you don’t want to clog your partners pores and trigger a breakout.
Pro tip: Always sweep your face in an upwards motion. Start from the base of the neck and run your hands and fingertips up along the neck. This is a must-master technique for anti-ageing skincare.

Essential skincare tips for men

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Essential skincare tips for men

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
They say you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes. While I think this statement is true to an extent, I think it applied better a few decades ago, before we became an increasingly casual culture where sneakers and jeans are now considered the norm.
Men, like their shoes, have undergone a style revolution. A smart suit, sleek hair and close shave is no longer the pinnacle of sophistication. Men are embracing as much diversity in dress code and appearance as women. Whether it’s a buzz cut, a beard, a moustache or some 5 o’clock shadow; men everywhere are challenging the conventions of what it means to be a dapper man.
One thing is for sure though, you can tell a lot about a man by how well he looks after his skin.
Men, unlike women have not yet made mainstream wearing makeup as coverup for any breakouts or blemishes. A woman is lucky that she can hide a pimple or her dark circles under her eyes with some powerful concealer, however, a man doesn’t have anything to hide behind, which is why he needs to be meticulous with his skincare regime.
Here are some tips to help the man in your life master their skincare regime:

  1. Don’t shave against the grain

Most men shave against the direction of their hair growth with the belief that it will get them a closer shave. By doing this the blade often nicks the buried surface of the hair follicle creating inflammation. For the best result, shave in the direction that feels smooth. Also, try and shave in precise sweeping motions to avoid repeating the same area over and over.

  1. Pick the right razor

Ever suffered an ingrown hair or are you prone to micro wounds from your shaving technique? It’s probably down to your choice of razor. While the market is saturated with ‘new and improved’ razors, whether they be four or five blade, electric or old school in design, it’s important to match your razor with your skin concerns. Do your homework and find a razor that’s right for you. A very important point, is to make sure your razor blades are changed regularly. Razors collect micro amounts of your skin, so you need to clean and replace them regularly to avoid any infections.

  1. Avoid aftershave and other gimmicky scented products

Remember the burn that aftershave gave you after your first shave? Well that stinging sensation and aggressively over-scented product is actually very harmful for you, especially if you suffer from sensitive skin. Take time to familiarise yourself with product ingredients. Many of these male-targeted products contain dyes and parabens that can aggravate your skin. Instead, opt for a hydrating moisturiser.

  1. Slip, slop and slap

If there is one product every guy should use, it is sunscreen. No matter how masculine you are, you can’t avoid being exposed to sun damage. If you spend a lot of time outdoors (even if it’s Winter and overcast outside) you are still being exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.  At Face Plus we recommend a minimum of 30 SPF.

Razor Sharp Cheekbones

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Razor Sharp Cheekbones

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
When people think about cheek filler it’s common that chipmunk cheeks come to mind. We think about the cheeks as only the fat pads on either side of your nose, however, cheek filler actually refers to your entire cheekbone. To locate your cheekbone, place your thumb directly above your ear tragus and your index finger below your nostril. The line that your hand creates is where your cheekbone is. Cheek filler encompasses all of that area.
The only person you want to see with chubby, chipmunk cheeks are babies. At Face Plus we understand people’s hesitation to undergo cheek fillers. The plastic surgery victims of Hollywood have given the procedure a bad name. The puffy, overstretched facial fillers are enough to turn anyone away, however, these unnatural results are often due to over-filling, inappropriate product placement or even the use of the wrong product.
When I think of great cheekbones, I think of Angelina Jolie, Naomi Campbell and Keira Knightley. Their naturally high cheekbones have a sculpted appearance and give their face a gorgeous, youthful lift.

When we’re young our face is full of curves, which reflect light and gives us a more youthful appearance. As we age, these curves start to flatten due to volume loss plus skeletal remodeling also occurring along the jawline, temples, cheeks, brows and chin. Fat pads under the skin shrink creating valleys within our face. Our skin starts to lose its strength and becomes thinner and inelastic. The face slowly flattens out.
The ultimate goals for cheek filler is to enhance facial contours and restore balanced age-appropriate outcome. When placed in the appropriate position with the appropriate amount of HA, fillers can give phenomenal results. Deep placement can actually lift and support the cheeks which in tern restores a more youthful appearance.
The benefits of cheek filler, is that the results are immediate and there is minimal downtime. Micro-injury caused by the needles stimulates the body’s own wound healing process triggering collagen production. Cheek filler is an effective solution to restoring smoothness and volume to the face.
When you’re looking for a cosmetic injector take your time to research their results and find a specialist that understands your needs. Make sure you go to someone who understands the facial anatomy and has a good eye for symmetry & balance. Someone who can study the movement of your face whilst understanding the bony architecture so that the filler placement is natural and supportive.
If you are considering cheek filler, book in for an injectable consultation today.

Anti-aging facial exercises

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Anti-aging facial exercises

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
We work out our bodies and our minds, but why don’t we focus on exercising our face. Throughout the day we make a million involuntary movements. We smile, we frown and sometimes we even cry. Sometimes these movements contribute to negative facial features, such as frown lines and crow’s feet, so it’s important we take time each day to practice conscious facial exercises that increase blood circulation to allow more oxygen to reach the cells of the skin. These exercises below promote lymphatic drainage of negative toxins, stimulate collage and elastin production to give you’re a smoother, tighter and more glowing complexion.
The following five anti-ageing facial exercises are from the Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method. Danielle recommends that you do these exercises for 20 minutes, six times a week. For the first couple of weeks, it’s a good idea to practice in the mirror to observe your facial movements and notice the changes in your appearance. In terms of progress, Danielle says to expect to see changes in your face and neck after only two weeks. Within 2-4 months you can will notice less fine lines and tension and you will look healthier and more energised.

Exercises for Stress Relief

Exercises for Stress Relief

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
Tough work week? Fight with your partner? Financial stress? Winter blues?
No matter how happy go lucky your personality is, it’s natural that every once in a while, you’re bound to feel a little stressed out. There are many different ways to approach dealing with stress. Some people like to take a nap or eat a cheat meal, while others like the tackle the problem head on. One of the easiest (and cheapest) methods to reducing stress is to exercise.
When you exercise your body releases endorphins, which are hormones that fight stress. Exercise also helps to clear your head and take your mind off your problems. These exercises help to exert energy and reduce your stress levels.
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
HIIT is a form of interval training, a cardiovascular exercise alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. Accelerating your heart rate helps release endorphins which are natural opiates that make you feel better with no side effects. HIIT can include F45 or boot camp classes or body attack if you are a member of a Fitness First.
This group style training is also a healthy social activity. Stress is often internalised and an isolating emotion. By engaging in social exercise, you are forcing yourself to break that inward reflection. It can often prove to be the kind of healthy distraction that you need.
Yoga
Regular yoga classes can assist wit reducing stress, anxiety and tension. Yoga has proven to have a calming effect on the body and many poses are beneficial for stress relief. Yoga also has a strong focus on deep breathing. By transferring focus and attention to the body and breath, yoga can help to temper anxiety, while also releasing physical tension.
Moves to try

  • Try the bridge pose which gently stretches the back and legs while reducing back aches, fatigue and anxiety.
  • Childs pose is a resting posture that quiets the mind and eases stress. It’s beneficial for the nervous system and lymphatic system

Kickboxing / Boxing
This one is pretty obvious. Sometimes all you feel like doing when you’re stressed is expelling your anger physically. Do this in a safe environment and join a boxing or kickboxing class. This rigorous workout is a great outlet for stress relief. It will also help to improve your coordination, strength, balance and flexibility. At the end of the class you’re guaranteed to have better mental clarity combined with physical exhaustion. Get a good night’s sleep and start the next day fresh.
Running outside
Let’s face it, most of our stress revolves around our busy lives. Whether it’s work or family commitments, as city slickers the hustle and bustle can sometimes become a bit much. After a long day in the office, sometimes the last thing you feel like doing is going straight into an overpacked gym.
Take any opportunity to get out into some big open space. Whether it’s your nearby beach or park, go for a long run or a walk outside and breath some fresh air. Leave your electronics behind and focus on enjoying the sounds of the waves crashing or the trees rustling. Beautiful, natural settings can really improve your mood and shake up your workout routine also.

PRP aka. Royal Liquid gold

[vc_row full_width=”” css=”.vc_custom_1457063834351{padding-top: 30px !important;}”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1457064161918{padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

PRP aka. Royal Liquid gold

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
This week at Face Plus we are experiencing Royal Wedding Mania. I personally cannot wait to spend my Saturday night on the couch with a glass of Pimm’s watching the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. My partner can’t seem to understand my obsession. I was always a big fan of Suits and the British royal family, respectively, so it’s only natural that I’m invested in their relationship. There’s just something so fairy-tale like about a prince choosing a commoner (their words, not mine) to be his princess wife. Meghan is an incredibly accomplished woman in her own right. She is a talented actress and a human rights activist who also happens to be divorcee and a few years older than her fiancé. As much as it’s a traditional love story, it’s also a very modern indication of the Royal family accepting a new age woman into their conservative royal world.
When I read that Meghan Markle was 36 years old I was shocked. She looks a decade younger. With gorgeous, glowing skin an even complexion and only the slightest touch of smile lines she gave me even more reason to be totally envious of her.
As an actress Meghan would need full use of her facial muscles, ruling out excessive use of muscle relaxants and filler. While there are reports circulating online that Meghan has had a touch of Botox to smooth out her frown line, you can tell that she really looks after her skin which is the true testament to her ageless appearance.
I asked our cosmetic injectors to tell me about the kind of treatments that they think Meghan Markle has undergone. Our dermal therapists were quick to jump in and say that it’s obvious she has a very strict and consistent at home skincare regime supplemented by regular facials. By examining close up photos of Meghan, you can see her pores are tight and her complexion even. When you look at photos of Meghan’s mum, you can clearly see where she got her amazing features from, so her genes also have a lot to do with it.
Our cosmetic injectors believe that if Meghan was to try any injectable treatment it would most likely be PRP (platelet rich plasma) – your body’s natural alternative to artificial muscle relaxants and filler.
Using your own body’s resources, PRP works by drawing a vile or 2 of your own blood and injecting higher concentrations of platelets back into your skin. This will release growth factors to the treatment site and stimulate new cell growth and regeneration. Your blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. When platelets are activated in the body they release healing proteins called growth factors. Growth factors create an accumulative result, which assists the body to repair itself by regenerating new tissue, improving blood supply and would healing, all of which are important factors in regenerative therapies.
At Face Plus we recommend between 3 to 6 treatments of PRP, 1-month apart for patients to see noticeable signs of skin tightening, improved texture and tone, with less fine lines and wrinkles.
PRP can either be injected directly into the skin using a tiny syringe used for administering muscle relaxants or it can be needled into the skin. This treatment is known as micro-needling or dermapen. This electric ‘pen’ has a series of tiny needles on the end that work to quickly and gently prick the skin to create micro wounds. These wounds engage the body’s natural repair process, encourages new skin growth and repair, increasing collagen and repairing damages or areas that may be scarred.
When combining needling and PRP, the skin is first needled then the plasma is directly applied to the surface of the skin, as it directly feeds into the micro wounds. The direct contact enhanced the effectiveness of PRP as the plasma is injected into the desired area.
The Dermapen & PRP combinations targets:
Rough or inconsistent skin texture
Sun damage
Pigmentation
Scars
Acne scars
Stretch marks
Fine wrinkles
Signs of aging
Broken capillaries
Large pores
While we can’t guarantee a PRP and micro-needling session will transform you into Meghan Markle, we can guarantee the treatment plan will leave you with her Markle youthful Sparkle.

Product of the week: Aevitas BB Finish 1 in 5

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
I used to think that good skin was down to well applied makeup. That was clearly before I got a job in beauty. Make up is an add on, it’s not the core item. To achieve good skin, you need a combined process of meticulous at home care, consistent dermal appointments and a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle.  While it’s common for many teenagers or young adults to want to cover up their blemishes with heavy layers of foundation, all that is, is a bandage solution for a gaping wound. The focus, instead should be to heal the aggravated skin.
That being said, as women, we often want to look and feel our very best and an easy way to do this is with some cover up. Whether it’s to even your skin tone, diffuse redness/pigmentation or disguise a blemish – we want a product that is healing rather than harmful for your skin.
The new Aevitas BB Finish is a 5 in 1 product designed by Omniderm, a subsidiary of Dr Spiller Skincare. A skincare company is the perfect fit to manufacture makeup as it ensures the ingredients contribute to the health and vitality of your skin.
The BB Finish by Aevitas Actives is nothing like you have experienced before in a complexion product. It delivers the most even-toned skin finish with the added boost of skin nourishing ingredients that will protect, moisturise, brighten and firm the skin.
The product is Australian made and owned and the ingredients used are organic, natural and rich with active ingredients. The 5 in 1 BB Finish is jam packed with:
