6 months in: update your goals for 2018
We are officially half way through 2018….oh my how it’s flown by.
Remember those promises you made to yourself? That summer time resolutions list?
Well it’s time to re-evaluate your progress and see if you can tick some off, add some new ones and maybe give your goals a bit of a half yearly update.
Goal setting is incredibly important to living a life on purpose. However big or small your goals are, they should be a reflection of where you want to go and who you want to be. Goals can be as pragmatic as learning to run a half marathon or as existential as wanting to wake up every morning feeling happy. They can be selfish or selfless. Goals are what take us forward in life. They are the first steps to every journey we take and are also our last. It’s very important that you realize the significance and importance of goal-setting and apply this knowledge in your life.
Begin with the end in mind. – Stephen Covey
Why is it so important to set goals?
- Goals give us focus
By setting goals you are giving yourself a target to shoot for. It provides a necessary sense of direction which allows your mind to focus on a target as opposed to wasting energy shooting aimlessly.
- Goals allow you to measure progress
Review what you set out to achieve at the start of 2018. If you didn’t write them down, take the time to do so now. Look at them one by one and assess if you have made any progress towards completing them. If you have/haven’t record your progress or your plan to action your goal.
This process can be extremely rewarding and reminds you to celebrate the journey as well as the final outcome.
- Goals keep you locked in
It’s always a good idea to set a time limit for you goal. While a year is always a good starting point, it can also be unrealistic to have all your goals completed in your timeframe. I suggest staggering them.
For example, in April I challenged myself to complete the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon. My goal had a 45-day time limit. The short lead time of this goal made it harder for me to quit as the finish line was clearly in site.
- Goals keep you from procrastinating
In a world of social media and memes we find it very difficult to focus. Use technology to your advantage and download apps to record your goals and set reminders. When you set a goal for yourself you make yourself accountable to finish the task.
- Most importantly – goals give you motivation
Goal setting provides you with the foundation for your drive. By making a goal you give yourself a finite endpoint to aim for. It should be something that you work hard for and something for you to get excited about. Goals should help you focus your energy in a positive direction to add purpose and value to your life.
So, go on, take another look at your goals for 2018. You have 6 months to achieve them.
