What are Post-Pregnenacy Procedures?

A Mummy Makeover is a totally customisable package of post-pregnancy procedures. It is a treatment plan that is created specifically for you, to meet your unique needs. Typically, Mummy Makeovers include procedures like breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, tummy tuck, liposuction or labiaplasty.

Breast surgery is popular as the breasts are one of the parts of the body most affected by motherhood. A breast augmentation procedure is often done to restore the volume that is lost during breastfeeding. Some women also opt to have a breast lift or breast reduction to reduce sagging and increase perkiness.

Excess body fat is another major concern. Liposuction is a very popular option for eliminating stubborn areas of fat and enhancing your feminine shape. A tummy tuck is another option that is very popular with mums. This procedure will tighten your abdominal muscles, flatten your stomach, and reshape your waist.

During pregnancy, many women find that their labia become larger and expand in response to their changing hormones and pelvic pressure. Labiaplasty is a simple and safe procedure that will restore your natural vaginal shape.

Is a Mummy Makeover is right for you?

A Mummy Makeover can be a good option for any mother who is in good general health and doesn’t plan to have more children.

The best way to familiarise yourself with your options is to meet with Dr Turner. At his busy practices in Sydney, Newcastle, and Dee Why, he offers one-on-one consultations to discuss each possible procedure and work with you to create a customised treatment plan.

Breast Enhancement Surgeries post-Pregnancy

Breast Augmentation

After pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is common for a woman to lose some breast volume, with the breasts appearing to look smaller and deflated. With the use of breast implants, the volume and more importantly the shape of the breast can be rejuvenated. At the same time, if the skin of the breast has been stretched and the nipple has gravitated lower on the breast, a breast lift can be added to improve skin looseness and nipple height to give a more youthful breast shape.

Breast Lift – with or without Implants

If breast changes are more severe following pregnancy then a breast lift may be the best procedure for you. The breast lift performed by Dr Turner will correct sagging loose skin and improve firmness without increasing the size of the breast. Dropping of the nipples will also be corrected. If the woman’s breasts also need revolumizing then we can offer the addition of fat grafting and/or breast augmentation combined with a breast lift surgery.

Breast Reduction

While many women find the after-effects of breastfeeding and pregnancy that their breasts have become deflated and saggy, some women find that their breasts have grown in size. This is quite common in women with overly large breasts that may have been putting up with the problem of large breasts prior to children, like back and neck pain, bra strap grooving and rashes in the breast fold. After children, many women now decide it’s the right time to do something about this, with a breast reduction performed as part of her mummy makeover surgery.

Breast reduction will remove the excess breast and fat tissue and reshape and lift the breasts as well. There are a variety of surgical approaches to this procedure so Dr Turner will work out the most appropriate for your needs. The many mums that have had a breast reduction as part of their mummy makeover transformation find that the long-term post-surgical effects are so very positive and all-encompassing.

Tummy Tuck

The effects of pregnancy can take a toll on the figure of every mum. The abdominal muscles and overlying skin are stretched by the growing baby leading to excess skin affected by stretch marks, with separation of the underlying abdominal muscles below. With twin pregnancies and multiple births, these changes become more prominent, with mums unlikely to have complete recovery of their bodies after children. Many mothers find that after having children their abdomens have permanent changes – stretch marks, loss of abdominal muscle tone, flabby and excess skin, and fatty deposits.

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedure can remove loose skin and excess fat from the abdomen. The separated stomach muscle can also be tightened and rejoined to recreate a strong abdominal core muscle with the added benefit of helping lower back pain and stress incontinence. Dr Turner may also incorporate liposuction at the same time for an abdomen that is flatter and firmer and an overall improvement in the body shape. It is one of the mommy makeover procedures that really give a woman not just a huge improvement physically but psychologically as well.

Liposuction

For many mums, they wish to remove stubborn abdominal fat that doesn’t go away after childbirth and want to know if liposuction alone can help them? The simple answer is if your underlying abdominal muscles are toned and have not separated and your abdominal skin has been minimally affected by stretch marks than liposuction alone is the answer. Unfortunately due to the effects of pregnancy, this is not the case for many women, so we often combine liposuction with a tummy tuck to recreated that slimmer more toned appearance.

Labiaplasty

Unfortunately having children not only can take a toll on your figure but can affect the appearance of your labia as well. During pregnancy, the labia enlarge in response to hormones and increased pelvic pressure of the growing baby. After the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding have returned to normal, like other areas affected by pregnancy, the skin of the labia is often stretched beyond repair resulting in an unattractive, sagging appearance.

As this is a very personal area of the body we want all of our prospective patients to know that there is a surgical procedure available which is a day-only procedure with little downtime but with excellent results. Women with enlarged labia are concerned due to visibility beneath tight-fitting clothing, discomfort, recurring rashes and a negative effect on their sex life. Recent media attention has empowered many women to realise that labiaplasty is an option and has increased the demand for labiaplasty significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions about Facelift Surgery

What’s included in a Mummy Makeover?

This group of procedures can include breast surgery, tummy tuck, genital surgery, and body contouring surgery.

Is a Mummy Makeover a good idea?

Mummy makeover surgery is a great way to restore your body shape and appearance after pregnancy or significant weight loss. This group of procedures can include breast surgery to lift, reduce or contour, tummy tuck and muscle repair, genital surgery, and other body contouring surgery like liposuction.

How do I know if I need a Mummy Makeover?

A mummy makeover may help if you have noticed the following Breasts that have lost their shape and volume

  • Enlarged areolas
  • Excess skin or fat in different body areas
  • Frequent vaginal irritation due to excess skin or tissue folds
  • Lopsided breasts
  • Nipples that fall below the breast crease
  • Sagging abdominal skin
  • Sagging or drooping breasts
  • Stretched breast tissue

How can I tighten my tummy with a Mummy Makeover?

A mummy makeover can include a surgical procedure known as a full tummy tuck with muscle repair which removes most of the skin and fat between your belly button and pubic area. When should I have a facelift?

There is no defined age that is best to undergo facelift surgery – we all age differently according to our genetics and environmental experiences such as sun exposure, skin care and smoking. Facelifts can be performed from early 40′s to late 70′s. Benefits usually last longer when a facelift is performed on a younger person who still have good skin elasticity.

How long will my facelift last?

Due to the natural ageing process and the effects of gravity. Facial ageing will unfortunately continue. With that being said, your face will always look younger than it did if you had never had a facelift done. Overall, this procedure tends to reset the clock, leading to a 10+ year advantage over individuals of the same age. If, over time, you would like an additional facelift, it is generally not as comprehensive as the initial surgery.

Will people be able to see that I’ve had a facelift?

After getting a facelift, many patients mention that their friends and family make remarks about how they look fresh and rested. People might ask if you have been away on holiday or if you’ve “changed something”. There is no characteristic look of a facelift. Forget about the problems with the old fashioned unnatural face lifts. Modern procedures are undetectable. The procedure simply restores your youthful look and no one will be able to tell you’ve had anything done. You’ll just look like a well-rested and fresh version of you.

Do you do fat transfer as part of a facelift?

Fat transfer are an integral component of any facelift surgery, to give complete rejuvenation of the face. The concept of the volumetric facelift, combines the benefit of restoring facial volume associated with ageing with fat injections combined with lifting and tightening the deeper facial structures with a SMAS facelift procedure. There are very few patients that don’t benefit from the addition of fat grafting as part of a facelift procedure.

Will I have any scars?

The incisions used during a facelift, will depend on the procedure and the technique used. For instance, the incisions made for a traditional facelift will differ from a short-scar facelift or midface lift. With incisions made in natural borders, hairlines, and folds, once fully healed, they will be barely noticeable. At first, they may be pink and slightly raised, but within the first few months, they will begin to quickly fade.

How quickly will stitches be removed? How quickly will I heal?

Once you leave the hospital, a follow-up appointment will be made within the first 7 days. At this time, Dr Turner will assess your wounds and remove stitches. After this step is completed, it’s recommended that you commence topical silicone ointment along the incision line. Overall, most patients look presentable after the first 2 weeks. The full healing time for soft tissue and skin will be around 6 months. Although scaring may be red and itchy at first, within the first few months, they’ll begin to lighten. After 1-2 years, they will soften and be barely noticeable.

How long will I need to take off work?

More patients can return to work after 2 weeks following surgery. Within the first 3 days, you will likely experience swelling, which then settles after approximately 1 week. Overall, the healing process is rapid, and you will be able to return to your regular routine within 2-3 weeks. At 2 weeks, for instance, you can generally begin to perform light exercise, gently increasing activity levels over 6 weeks.

Will I need a drain after my facelift?

Yes, in most cases. Drains are used to gather excessive fluid after a facelift procedure. Your drain will be removed the day after your procedure. If you’re having a short scar facelift in a limited area, you might not need a drain. Dr Turner will advise you before the procedure so you know exactly what to expect.

Do hairlines shift after a facelift?

During your consultation with Dr Turner we evaluate which incision placement is best suited for you. If you require a large amount of skin removal than an incision placed along the hair line will minimize any hairline shifts which are an unfortunate stigma of having a poorly executed facelift surgery.

What is the best alternative to a Mummy Makeover?

Depending on the results you want to achieve, your surgeon may recommend non-surgical procedures such as laser treatments, radiofrequency-based treatments, or fat-dissolving injections. For most women, with excess stretched skin, split tummy muscles or significantly sagging breasts, surgery is required. Medicare and private health insurance may help with some procedures.

Should I get a Mummy Makeover or Liposuction?

If you want longer-lasting results and you desire treatment of multiple body areas, a mummy makeover is right for you. However, if you prefer a lesser invasive procedure with a shorter recovery time, you should undergo liposuction. If you have significant excess or stretched skin, liposuction alone cannot help, and surgery is indicated.

How much weight do you lose with a mummy makeover?

While the procedure is designed to restore your pre-pregnancy body, its primary function is not weight loss. During breast and tummy surgery excess skin and tissue weighing 2 to 5kg may be removed.
