What is Chin Liposuction?

Chin liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes double chin and contours the neck and jawline. It is one of the most popular neck rejuvenation procedures. It targets the persistent fat under the neck skin, which is “sucked” out using a liposuction cannula. The results are a more defined jawline, chin, and neck.

Chin liposuction has other names including:

  • Submental liposuction
  • Chin lipo
  • Neck liposuction
  • Double chin surgery
  • Double chin removal
  • Double chin correction
  • Double chin reduction

If you have a lot of chin fat and lax skin, submental liposuction can be combined with a neck lift. However, in patients with good skin elasticity, the skin can naturally tighten after liposuction without needing a lift.
Chin fat removal can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. It requires minimal downtime and causes minimal post-op symptoms.

Who Needs Chin Liposuction?

You might want to get your chin fat removed but, sometimes, submental lipo might not be the best option for you. In general, you should consider getting liposuction for chin fat if:

  • You have double or triple chin
  • You have jowls obscuring your jawline
  • You have chin and neck fat fading your neckline
  • You are not overweight – in overweight patients, fat accumulates under the neck muscles (called “subplatysmal fat”). This layer of fat is not accessible by liposuction
  • You have good skin elasticity – Chin lipo alone might not deliver satisfactory outcomes in people with overstretched lax neck skin. If the fat is removed, the skin does not bounce back and remains droopy. A neck lift with liposuction can, however, lead to excellent results.
  • You are in a good health condition
  • You have a fairly stable weight

The main thing you need to consider when getting neck fat removal by lipo is your skin quality. If you have a large double chin with loose skin, then the skin might not retract on the new contours. A neck lift procedure should, and often is, combined to contour your chin and neck.

Benefits of Chin Liposuction

The decision to get double chin correction surgery is not an easy one. However, it comes with several advantages and benefits, such as:
  • It has minimal side effects and recovery symptoms
  • It requires minimal downtime – usually 1-2 days of home rest
  • It’s a quick procedure (15-20 minutes)
  • Double chin reduction
  • Can help contour your jawline
  • Can get rid of bulky jowls
  • Can help remove chin and neck fat
  • Defines your neck and chin contour, creating a sharper angle between them Brings out your chin profile
Additionally, double chin removal surgery can be beneficial for your overall self-esteem and positive body image. It can help you look the way you want to look, without having to invest too much time and effort.

Recovery after Chin Liposuction

Overall, recovery after chin liposuction is regarded as tolerable. This is one of the top advantages of this procedure. You can usually go home directly after double chin surgery- no need to stay overnight at the hospital.
You will have to take 1-3 days off work and rest at home. During this time, you should allow your body to heal. During the first week of recovery after submental lipo, you should avoid strenuous activities. Walking, however, is encouraged. You should also wear a chin compression strap for 5-7 days to reduce swelling.
You will notice swelling, bruising, and minimal pain in the chin, jaw, and neck area. These will gradually start decreasing 5-7 days after chin fat removal.
The results of chin liposuction are apparent immediately after the surgery. Nevertheless, the full results take several months to settle in. During this time, your skin will retract and any residual swelling will be absorbed, leaving you with a well-defined chin, neck, and jaw.

Risks and Potential Complications of Chin Lipo

As with other surgeries, liposuction of chin fat comes with some risks. Nevertheless, the risk of complications with this procedure is very minimal. Some of the rare complications include:

  • Wound infection
  • Bleeding
  • Seroma (fluid collection in the wound)
  • Haematoma (blood collection in the wound)
  • Fat embolism (an extremely rare complication in which fat debris get into the blood circulation)
  • Skin numbness (due to nerve injury)
  • Unsatisfactory results (e.g. asymmetry, bulkiness, loose skin)
  • Excessive scarring (usually genetic)

Although these complications are rare, you can avoid them better by choosing an experienced plastic surgeon for your chin liposuction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions about Chin Liposuction Surgery

Are chin liposuction results long lasting?

In a sense, yes. Chin liposuction removes the fat cells from the chin and neck area. They do not recur unless you gain a lot of weight. Ageing too can make the chin puff due to tissue proliferation in this region. So, even though a chin lipo is very durable, you might need revision surgery after many years.

Can fat return after chin lipo?

No. Fat does not return after chin liposuction if you maintain a stable weight. The removed fat cells are gone forever. Nevertheless, ageing can cause other tissue components to puff up as you age. In such cases, a neck lift or another revision procedure might be needed.

Which is better, chin liposuction or Fat Dissolving injections?

Kybella/Belkyra is an excellent technology to destroy fat cells in the chin area. However, Dr Turner believes liposuction provides more dramatic and more durable results. On the other hand, Double Chin Injections might be a cheaper and non-surgical alternative for chin lipo for some.

Does chin lipo leave scars?

No. The scars of chin liposuction are usually not noticeable. Liposuction wounds are tiny. So, as the wounds heal, they fade and become almost invisible. In some rare cases, abnormal healing might lead to visible scarring after double chin correction.

Does chin lipo tighten skin?

Chin liposuction itself does not tighten the skin. It only removes the fat under it. Nevertheless, if you have good skin elasticity, the skin will naturally tighten slightly over a few months. If you, however, have decreased skin elasticity, then an additional neck lift might need to be combined with your double chin reduction to reduce excess skin.

Can you shower after chin lipo?

Yes. You can shower the next day after your chin liposuction. Make sure to use a soft towel to gently dry your wounds after showering.

Can I get lipo on my double chin?

Yes. Chin liposuction is considered the best and most effective way to get rid of double chin. It is a simple procedure with very durable results. The chin fat is permanently “sucked” and removed from around your chin.

Does chin lipo include cheeks?

Not entirely. Chin liposuction targets the lower face, chin, jaw, and upper neck areas. It can, however, help get rid of the fat that can cause jowls to appear.

Can I drive after chin liposuction?

No. Intravenous sedation is usually given during chin lipo. So, you might be drowsy after the procedure and will not be allowed to drive a car home. You should arrange for someone reliable to pick you up after the surgery.

What can I eat after chin liposuction?

There are no dietary restrictions after chin lipo. You are free to eat whatever you want to eat.

Will double chin go away with weight loss?

Many factors, like genetics, play a role. Sometimes, the fat stores in the chin are just too stubborn and do not go away with weight loss. In such cases, the best way to remove chin fat is through liposuction.

Why do I have a double chin when I'm skinny?

This is usually related to your genetics. Some people tend to store fat in specific areas of the body. That’s the neck and chin region in your case. Chin lipo can permanently remove the fat stores in this region and get rid of double chin.
