Collagen Supplements – Are They Worth The Hype?

Collagen, often referred to as the body’s “building blocks,” is a remarkable protein that holds a vital role in maintaining the structure and health of various tissues and organs. With its abundance in the body, collagen supports everything from skin elasticity to joint flexibility. In recent years, collagen supplements have gained significant attention for their potential to boost collagen levels and enhance skin, hair, joint, and bone health. In this article, we’ll delve into the different types of collagen and their benefits, helping you make informed decisions about choosing the right collagen supplement for your needs.

Understanding the Types of Collagen

Collagen comes in various types, each with specific roles and functions within the body. The most prevalent types of collagen are types I, II, and III, each catering to different areas of wellness.

Type I Collagen

Type I collagen is the most abundant in the body and plays a significant role in maintaining the integrity of the skin, tendons, bones, ligaments, and connective tissues. This collagen type is often derived from cows and can be found in both grass-fed bovine and marine collagen supplements. Its presence in the skin is particularly crucial, as it contributes to the skin’s pliability and youthful appearance.

Studies have shown that oral supplementation with hydrolysed type I collagen can lead to smoother facial lines and wrinkles, as well as improved skin moisture levels. While the benefits of ingesting collagen type I are clear for skin health, its impact on wound healing when taken orally requires further investigation.

Type II Collagen

Type II collagen is primarily found in cartilage, bones, and other connective tissues. This type of collagen is sourced from animals like chickens and cows and is utilized to support joint health. Though it may not have a pronounced impact on skin health, type II collagen could potentially help manage pain and swelling, particularly related to joint conditions like osteoarthritis.

Type II collagen is less prevalent in collagen supplements compared to type I, making it an option for those specifically seeking joint support. It’s important to note that type II collagen is present in marine collagen but not in grass-fed bovine collagen supplements.

Type III Collagen

Type III collagen works in tandem with type I collagen to maintain skin health, elasticity, and joint function. Unlike marine collagen, grass-fed bovine collagen contains type III collagen, making it an appealing choice for individuals looking to promote healthy skin and overall vitality. Research suggests that type III collagen may play a significant role in skin aging, as its content decreases with age. This type of collagen is crucial for fibroblast function, which, in turn, contributes to collagen and elastin production, thus supporting wound healing and skin health.

Choosing the Right Collagen Supplement

When selecting a collagen supplement, it’s essential to consider your specific health goals and requirements. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  1. Type of Collagen: Identify the type of collagen that aligns with your needs. For skin health and overall well-being, both type I and type III collagens are essential. For joint support, consider collagen supplements containing type II collagen.
  2. Source: Determine whether you prefer marine collagen (sourced from fish) or grass-fed bovine collagen (sourced from cows). Each source has its benefits, so choose based on your dietary preferences and needs.
  3. Quality: Look for reputable brands that provide high-quality collagen supplements. Opt for products that have undergone testing for purity and potency.
  4. Form: Collagen supplements are available in various forms, including powders, capsules, and gummies. Choose the form that suits your convenience and lifestyle.
  5. Additional Ingredients: Some collagen supplements may include additional ingredients like vitamins, minerals, or antioxidants. Assess whether these additives align with your overall health goals.

In summation, collagen supplements offer a convenient and promising way to support skin, hair, joint, and bone health. With different types of collagen catering to various aspects of wellness, understanding your individual needs is key to selecting the right supplement. Whether you’re looking to enhance skin elasticity, manage joint discomfort, or promote overall vitality, the world of collagen supplements holds a wealth of possibilities to explore and incorporate into your wellness journey. Always consult a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your supplement regime.

Cleansing Gels

If you like to wear a lot of makeup, or like us you are getting Halloween glam this weekend, you might need to consider adding a cleansing gel into your skincare routine.

Face Plus Medispa stocks an extensive range of cleansers from milk to gel formulas, however, it is important to match your cleanser to your skin’s requirements.

A milk cleanser for example is a bit too gentle to remove stubborn eye and contour makeup which is where a gel base comes into play.

For some skin types it may even be necessary to use two different cleansing products i.e. a cleansing gel for the first wash followed by a cleansing milk for the second wash. As part of a healthy skincare routine it is important to ensure you are double cleansing your skin both morning and night.

1st Cleanse (to remove makeup and environmental debris)
2nd cleanse (to ensure the skin is clean)
Double cleansing is incredibly important as you need to remove all physical and environmental toxins before re-hydrating the skin with topical products.

You need to start with a clean canvas.

Below is Face Plus Medispa’s top 2 gel cleansers. These gel cleaners will properly dissolve your makeup and lift the dirt/ residue from your face.

If you do have sensitive skin, we would recommend switching to a milk cleanser for the second cleanse as is a gentle way to now focus on cleaning the skin itself, as opposed to the product layered onto the skin.

Dr. Spiller Sensitive Aloe Cleansing Gel

This water-soluble cleansing gel cleans the skin without stripping and drying it. It is the perfect cleanser for sensitive, reactive or oily skin types.

The aloe vera extract acts to smooth and sooth the skin whilst reducing visible redness that can occur when you cleanse your skin after a prolonged period of wearing heavy makeup.

HydroPeptide Cleansing Gel

The HydroPeptide Cleansing gel is an all in one miracle product. It combines a makeup remover, toner and anti-ageing cleanser together to make your skincare routine super-efficient.

This lightweight gel formula is massaged with damp hands into the skin and gently dissolves dirt, oil and makeup while balancing excess oil production.

The product is gluten, paraben, phthalates, sulphates and cruelty free.

What is a toner and why do I need to use one?

What is toner?
A toner is used to re-balance the pH levels in your skin after cleansing.  Our skin is naturally acidic, however that balance is disrupted after cleansing due to the alkaline ingredients in facial cleansers. After cleansing your skin tries to naturally restore the acid levels, which can lead to your skin generating excess oil which can result in breakouts. A toner helps to quickly restore the skin’s pH balance of between a 5 to 6 (on a scale of 0 to 14).
Toners are a skincare product that have the consistency of water. They assist to remove excess oil and debris that a cleanser may have missed. It’s important to think of your toner as a primer for the rest of your skincare routine.
Traditionally many toner products contained a high concentration of alcohol. This could be quite drying for the skin. The newest generation of toners act to nourish and replenish the skin after cleansing to help the skin better absorb the serums and creams in your skincare regime.

Benefits of using a toner:

  • helps to shrink pores
  • removes any makeup residue that cleansing misses
  • helps to purify acne-prone/ oily skin types
  • It adds a layer of protection by tightening cell gaps to reduce the penetration of impurities and environmental contaminants
  • Allows other skincare products to absorb better into your skin
  • Can prevent ingrown hairs

When do you use a toner?
A toner is used immediately after double cleansing your face. You should use it in your morning and evening skincare routine. If you need to exfoliate your skin (which you should only do twice a week) then wash your face, exfoliate, then apply your toner.
You should apply your toner no less than 1 minute after cleansing. The molecules penetrate deeper into your dermal layer when the skin is wet.
Once you have used your toner, wait a minute while the product is absorbed into your skin before continuing with your serums and moisturisers.

How do you apply toner?
The method is up to you, however, here are the most popular applications by our dermal therapists.

  1. Sprinkle some toner into the palm of your hand then tap it directly onto the skin, gently pressing the product into your skin with your palm.
  2. Use gauze instead of cotton pads so you don’t waste any product getting absorbed in the cotton. Gently swipe the product around your face, working outwards in upwards sweeping motions.

How do you pick the right toner for you?
Just like when you choose a moisturiser, you would select a toner based on your particular skin’s needs. We recommend consulting with your dermal therapist to ensure you use a product that will help resolve your skincare issues.

Toner for breakout prone, oily skin:
The Beauty Chef, Probiotic Skin Refiner

Think of the skin refiner as a topical probiotic to balance and strengthen your skin’s ecosystem. After cleansing, pour a small amount of the Probiotic Skin Refiner onto some gauze and sweep over your face.
This multi-purpose skin elixir gently exfoliates, balances and hydrates thirsty skin as well as stimulates collagen synthesis for improved tone and texture. It encourages cellular turnover and helps reverse the signs of sun damaged skin and may reduce skin breakouts.

Toner for Combination Skin:
Dr. Spiller Cucumber Toner

A re-balancing toner for a revitalised and purified complexion. Cucumber Toner restores the skin’s optimal pH whilst removing cleansing residue. The cucumber extract helps to visibly reduce redness and smooths the skin. The lactic acid also helps to bind moisture for increased hydration.

Toner for Sensitive Skin:
Dr. Spiller Aloe Sensitive Toner

A pleasantly refreshing and soothing toner formulated with Aloe Vera and Arginin which has a smoothing and moisturising effect on the skin. Sensitive Toner with Aloe also restores the skin’s optimal pH level. The Dr. Spiller Aloe toner is best suited for sensitised, reactive and dehydrated skin types.

Products for Acne

No two acne breakouts are the same, therefore it is important not to self diagnose and trust the guidance and advice of your therapist.

Make-up
The primary response for a person with acne is to disguise it, usually under a mountain of heavy makeup. There is one very important thing to note…acne will continue to thrive the longer the skin is unable to breathe.

The skin is a living breathing organ and we should respect that. Professionally the dermal therapists at Face Plus recommend any makeup that is free of dimethicones (silicones) and mineral.

If you are looking for a makeup brand that is rich in coverage, but healing and calming for your skin we urge you try the Aevitas BB Finish.

It contains antibacterial ingredients as well as a full coverage that will help to camouflage redness.

Skincare
Clients with acne need to be conscious of the skincare products they use while being meticulous with their morning and evening routines.

We stock several award winning, cosmeceutical brands at Face Plus and while each product line is excellent, your skin should be thoroughly assessed by our therapists to see which product will best suit your skin type.

Product Must haves to reduce fine lines and wrinkles

Product Must haves to reduce fine lines and wrinkles

When it comes to at home skincare, consistency is key. While the steps of your morning and evening skincare should stay the same no matter what your age (cleanser, toner, moisturiser, serum, eye cream…), our dermal therapists advise updating some of your products to ensure they are rich in active and hydrating ingredients to compliment more mature aged skin.
Here is a list of 3 must own skincare products for anyone looking to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in order to promote more plump and hydrated skin.

A good quality Eye Cream: Silk Eye Contour Cream by Dr. Spiller
The skin surrounding your eyes is much more fragile and thin compared to the rest of your face. It is also prone to dryness and is the first to show signs of age and fatigue. This is due to the overactivity of the skin surrounding the eye area.  Fluids also collect under the eyes and cause puffiness and dark circles. You therefore need to nourish this delicate skin with quality product to hydrate and soothe the area.
The Dr. Spiller Silk Contour Eye Cream is an anti-ageing, lifting and firing eye cream designed to re-contour and tone the appearance of the eye area. When it comes to eye cream ingredients you want to look for a product with active ingredients to stimulate cell turnover. The Dr. Spiller Silk eye cream contains silk peptides which are botanically rich in amino acids. The silk peptides have wound healing, moisturizing, re-building and anti-inflammatory properties.

A collagen rich moisturiser: Dr Spiller Collagen Cream
One of Dr Spiller’s most popular products is the Collagen Cream. The Collagen Cream is a concentrated emulsion rich in collagen hydrolysates, powerful anti-oxidants and moisture-binding properties to provide the skin with long- lasting anti-ageing protection.
The Collagen cream is a hydrating cream that is perfect for winter. The weather at the moment is quite aggressive on the skin with the cooler temperatures and the dry heat indoors. This cream contains a hyaluronic acid which locks in moisture into the skin, preventing trans epidermal water loss.
Warning though, this cream is quite rich so is recommended for clients with the following skin concerns:
Mature Skin: The bee’s wax present works as an anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and antibacterial. This magical ingredient is also softening and regulates skin consistency.
Anti-aging: Hydrolysed collagen is processed to achieve a lower molecular weight than regular collagen. The structure forming protein works to improve the elasticity in the skin.
Dry/Dehydrated: Vitamin E a skin identical potent antioxidant, naturally secreted by the sebaceous gland for environmental moisture protection. The Avocado extract activates the cell metabolism of the connective tissue. The lanolin present works as an emulsifier with high water-absorption capabilities, the lanolin is also emollient with moisturising properties.

An active peptide Serum: HydroPeptide Power Serum
The HydroPeptide, Power Serum was designed specifically to treat deep wrinkles and sagging. Patients who have used this product on their skin saw immediate results that made their skin look younger and firmer.
The HydroPeptide Power Serum contains a total of 13 active peptides including 4 volumising peptides, 4 plumping, 3 relaxing and 2 preservative peptides offering maximum and superior anti-aging benefits. These peptides work to increase skin volume to fill the look of fine lines and deep wrinkles, help to lift and firm sagginess while reducing the appearance of expression lines.

Dr. Spiller Cleansing Milk & Toner with Cucumber Extracts

When I first tried the Dr. Spiller Cleansing Milk, I assumed it was a light weight moisturiser.

The milky formula and smooth texture was a far cry from your typical clear and soapy smelling face wash.

It was this simple visual and textural difference that made me so intrigued to try this product.
Often, I find face washes to be a bit too harsh on my sensitive skin.

The pH in the Dr. Spiller Cucumber Milk is sensitive skin friendly and does not strip of irritate the skin. The pleasant and mild cucumber extract is rich in antioxidant avonoids, polyphenols, potassium, magnesium and vitamins A, C and E.

The Cucumber extract also helps to reduce the appearance of redness and lessens the appearance of pigmentation. As far as face washes go, this Dr. Spiller range does far more than cleanse your skin.

It’s non-drying creamy formula purifies, revitalises and lightens your complexion making it the perfect cleanser for those that suffer from breakouts, congestion and open pores; in other words suitable for oily/ combination skin.

The Dr. Spiller Cleansing Milk is designed to be used in harmony with the Dr. Spiller Cucumber Toner.

It has long been asked, why we actually need to use a toner in our skincare regime. Toner was originally created as an extra cleansing step to remove dirt and impurities from makeup and environmental pollution.

While Face Plus often recommends double cleansing your face (particularly if you have been wearing a lot of makeup during the day) this can also result in an imbalance in your pH levels. Toners are specifically designed to restore this balance to your skin to keep your skin from becoming too dry or oily and you cleanse your face. A toner will also help to tighten your pores to help make your skin visibly smoother.

When choosing a toner, it is important to opt for one that is hydrating. The Dr. Spiller Cucumber Toner contains lactic acid which is a biomimetic NMF to bind moisture for increased hydration.

The Cucumber Toner, like it’s Cleansing counterpart is a skin friendly, non-sticky formula that feels lightweight and effortless on the skin. Our dermal therapist Jodie, recommends replacing your cotton pad with some gauze when applying toner.

This way you maximise the product on your face and don’t loose as much to the absorption on the cotton pad.
The Dr. Spiller Cucumber Milk Cleanser and Toner are skin care essentials to help you on your way to clear and glowing skin.

Keep the two in your bathroom and encourage your partner to incorporate it into his morning and night skincare regime. The calming cucumber smell will have them hooked after the first use.
