Tips to being present on your holiday

A holiday is a time for ultimate indulgence and relaxation.

As a much needed break from reality, make sure to really switch off from your usual routine and be present throughout your holiday.

Here are some modern-day tips to decompress and declutter your thoughts. We promise, you’ll enjoy your holiday a hell of a lot more if you forget about the contents of you inbox.

1.Wake up when you wake up
Obviously this one has to apply to you once you settle into your holiday, however there is nothing nicer than letting your body rest and wake up when it wants to.

Don’t set your usual alarm and if you do need to be somewhere, change your alarm sound to something completely different from your usual routine.

This small psychological step will ensure you don’t panic your body to think about your usual schedule.

2.Wake up with the sun
On a summer holiday, ditch the blackout curtains and embrace the morning sun.

You find you’ll wake up happier with the natural melonin boost.

3. Eat breakfast without technology
Whether it’s a decadent buffet breakfast or a croissant and a cup of tea take this time to wonder at the world around, instead of staring into your phone.

When you’re on holiday make a point to delight each of your senses.

Your sense of smell is the strongest for memory, so make a point to stop and smell the air

4. Exercise outdoors
While you might be used to gyms at home, on holidays switch up your routine and exercise outside.

Whether it’s going for a hike to a local ruin, going for a big swim or doing a body weight circuit in a nearby park, the more you are amongst the local culture, the better.

5. If you need to check your emails do it once a day then leave it alone
There is nothing worse than having one foot in Italy and the other foot in the office.
While it’s ideal to switch off completely, that’s not always achievable.

Instead of checking emails intermittently throughout the day, set aside a time and do it consistently.

It’s a good idea to set the rules on your out of office ( include the appropriate time difference) so any invested parties know the best time to reach you.

5. Sit and observe
This one is very similar to enjoying a sensory experience. If you are on a train or tanning by a beach take some of that time to do it technology free.

Unplugging will help you unwind and really take in your surroundings.
Take deep breaths and try and capture the moments in your memory.

When you’re back from holidays it will be these moments, not the thousands of photos that you will remember the most.

6. Snap now, post later
With the immediacy of social media, there is this pressure to want to impress your friends with your travel pics.

When you’re at a famous site take a look around at the number of people hooked to their phones, editing photos and captions.

Take the photo, enjoy the moment then when you’re back in your hotel upload your photo.

Tips to being a stress-free bride

“Feelings are just vistors, let them come and go” -Mooji

Stress happens to everyone….but especially to brides in the leadup to their wedding.

Many brides dream about their perfect wedding well before they are even engaged. From the dress, to the venue, the flowers and the guests… planning a wedding is a milestone event where you have the added pressure of also being the centre of attention.

It’s no wonder that this pressure for perfection causes even a ‘relaxed, cool girl’ bride to lose a few days of sleep.

Stress while not totally unavoidable, is manageable. Eating healthily, exercising regularly and ensuring you get enough sleep is a good start but here are a few more tips to ensure you take care of yourself before your big day.

  1. Don’t make the wedding all about you

This one might sound a little backhanded, but what we mean, is make sure to delegate responsibilities out to all invested parties and hold those people accountable.

Most people assume that the wedding is completely controlled by the bride, not realising that their crazy mother in law has invited half her bridge class.

If that’s the case, make the mother in law in charge of the first round of seating arrangements, then you can just do final edits.

Delegation is key to being a stress-free bride and don’t be afraid to remind your partner that they are equally responsible too.

  1. Make a list of what is most important to you and focus on making those right….as for the rest, don’t worry if they aren’t flawless

If all you care about is how your dress fits and what the flowers look like, then invest your energy wholeheartedly there and don’t stress too much about the rest.

Sure, you want the band to play nice songs and the menu cards to be perfectly placed, but in the end of the day if the drinks are flowing and the mood is buzzing, no one will notice the details like you would.

  1. Write your thoughts down

Your mind can often be busy thinking about a million things at once. Keep a notepad by your bed, or start a checklist on your phone and add to it every time you have a question or a doubt you need to check.

That way you keep all your thoughts in one place and can tick them off at your next bridal session.

  1. Schedule in bridal time

Unlike in the movies where brides do nothing but plan their wedding all day, most people have regular 9-5 jobs to maintain before a wedding.

Cake tasting isn’t an all-day activity, its something you do on a lunchbreak or as an appointment after work. Just like you would schedule in a WIP call, pencil in a wedding meeting with yourself one evening a week.

Set an agenda ahead of time and make a point to action all of your items before you return to your Netflix show. While it might seem unromantic to handle a wedding like you would a work meeting, it is after all an event that needs proper planning.

Take emotion out of these meetings and just address them as action points that way you will get through the list much quicker.

  1. Schedule in non-bridal time

From the moment you get engaged many brides feel like all they get asked is questions about the wedding. Many find this experience utterly frustrating and overwhelming.

It’s important to remember that before you were a bride you were a person and your significant other’s partner. Take time alone and with your partner to just be together without all the bridal chatter.

  1. Think about the future

Many brides get bogged down in the details of their big day they forget to focus on the honeymoon and life after the wedding. If a wedding is meant to symbolise the start of your new life then make exciting plans for that new life.

Don’t fall victim to the anti-climactic ‘after the wedding’ feeling, be excited that you’ll never have to argue over the seating arrangements of your partners second cousins.

Most importantly remember that being a bride means marrying the love of your life. If you remind yourself that the day is about love then that long list of material items really does seem irrelevant.

You could have the most expensive and perfectly structured wedding but if you don’t enjoy every moment of it and exude a happy and positive vibe, then all the hard work will be lost amongst the stress.

6 months in: update your goals for 2018

6 months in: update your goals for 2018

We are officially half way through 2018….oh my how it’s flown by.
Remember those promises you made to yourself? That summer time resolutions list?
Well it’s time to re-evaluate your progress and see if you can tick some off, add some new ones and maybe give your goals a bit of a half yearly update.
Goal setting is incredibly important to living a life on purpose. However big or small your goals are, they should be a reflection of where you want to go and who you want to be. Goals can be as pragmatic as learning to run a half marathon or as existential as wanting to wake up every morning feeling happy. They can be selfish or selfless.    Goals are what take us forward in life. They are the first steps to every journey we take and are also our last. It’s very important that you realize the significance and importance of goal-setting and apply this knowledge in your life.
Begin with the end in mind. – Stephen Covey
Why is it so important to set goals?

  1. Goals give us focus

By setting goals you are giving yourself a target to shoot for. It provides a necessary sense of direction which allows your mind to focus on a target as opposed to wasting energy shooting aimlessly.

  1. Goals allow you to measure progress

Review what you set out to achieve at the start of 2018. If you didn’t write them down, take the time to do so now. Look at them one by one and assess if you have made any progress towards completing them. If you have/haven’t record your progress or your plan to action your goal.
This process can be extremely rewarding and reminds you to celebrate the journey as well as the final outcome.

  1. Goals keep you locked in

It’s always a good idea to set a time limit for you goal. While a year is always a good starting point, it can also be unrealistic to have all your goals completed in your timeframe. I suggest staggering them.
For example, in April I challenged myself to complete the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon. My goal had a 45-day time limit. The short lead time of this goal made it harder for me to quit as the finish line was clearly in site.

  1. Goals keep you from procrastinating

In a world of social media and memes we find it very difficult to focus. Use technology to your advantage and download apps to record your goals and set reminders. When you set a goal for yourself you make yourself accountable to finish the task.

  1. Most importantly – goals give you motivation

Goal setting provides you with the foundation for your drive. By making a goal you give yourself a finite endpoint to aim for. It should be something that you work hard for and something for you to get excited about. Goals should help you focus your energy in a positive direction to add purpose and value to your life.
So, go on, take another look at your goals for 2018. You have 6 months to achieve them.

Essential skincare tips for men

They say you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes.

While I think this statement is true to an extent, I think it applied better a few decades ago, before we became an increasingly casual culture where sneakers and jeans are now considered the norm.

Men, like their shoes, have undergone a style revolution. A smart suit, sleek hair and close shave is no longer the pinnacle of sophistication.

Men are embracing as much diversity in dress code and appearance as women. Whether it’s a buzz cut, a beard, a moustache or some 5 o’clock shadow; men everywhere are challenging the conventions of what it means to be a dapper man.

One thing is for sure though, you can tell a lot about a man by how well he looks after his skin.
Men, unlike women have not yet made mainstream wearing makeup as coverup for any breakouts or blemishes.

A woman is lucky that she can hide a pimple or her dark circles under her eyes with some powerful concealer, however, a man doesn’t have anything to hide behind, which is why he needs to be meticulous with his skincare regime.

Here are some tips to help the man in your life master their skincare regime:

  1. Don’t shave against the grain

Most men shave against the direction of their hair growth with the belief that it will get them a closer shave. By doing this the blade often nicks the buried surface of the hair follicle creating inflammation. For the best result, shave in the direction that feels smooth. Also, try and shave in precise sweeping motions to avoid repeating the same area over and over.

  1. Pick the right razor

Ever suffered an ingrown hair or are you prone to micro wounds from your shaving technique? It’s probably down to your choice of razor.

While the market is saturated with ‘new and improved’ razors, whether they be four or five blade, electric or old school in design, it’s important to match your razor with your skin concerns. Do your homework and find a razor that’s right for you. A very important point, is to make sure your razor blades are changed regularly.

Razors collect micro amounts of your skin, so you need to clean and replace them regularly to avoid any infections.

  1. Avoid aftershave and other gimmicky scented products

Remember the burn that aftershave gave you after your first shave? Well that stinging sensation and aggressively over-scented product is actually very harmful for you, especially if you suffer from sensitive skin.

Take time to familiarise yourself with product ingredients. Many of these male-targeted products contain dyes and parabens that can aggravate your skin. Instead, opt for a hydrating moisturiser.

  1. Slip, slop and slap

If there is one product every guy should use, it is sunscreen. No matter how masculine you are, you can’t avoid being exposed to sun damage.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors (even if it’s Winter and overcast outside) you are still being exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.  At Face Plus we recommend a minimum of 30 SPF.

Exercises for Stress Relief

Tough work week? Fight with your partner? Financial stress? Winter blues?

No matter how happy go lucky your personality is, it’s natural that every once in a while, you’re bound to feel a little stressed out. There are many different ways to approach dealing with stress.

Some people like to take a nap or eat a cheat meal, while others like the tackle the problem head on. One of the easiest (and cheapest) methods to reducing stress is to exercise.

When you exercise your body releases endorphins, which are hormones that fight stress. Exercise also helps to clear your head and take your mind off your problems.

These exercises help to exert energy and reduce your stress levels.
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
HIIT is a form of interval training, a cardiovascular exercise alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods.

Accelerating your heart rate helps release endorphins which are natural opiates that make you feel better with no side effects. HIIT can include F45 or boot camp classes or body attack if you are a member of a Fitness First.

This group style training is also a healthy social activity. Stress is often internalised and an isolating emotion. By engaging in social exercise, you are forcing yourself to break that inward reflection.

It can often prove to be the kind of healthy distraction that you need.

Yoga
Regular yoga classes can assist wit reducing stress, anxiety and tension. Yoga has proven to have a calming effect on the body and many poses are beneficial for stress relief. Yoga also has a strong focus on deep breathing.

By transferring focus and attention to the body and breath, yoga can help to temper anxiety, while also releasing physical tension.
Moves to try

  • Try the bridge pose which gently stretches the back and legs while reducing back aches, fatigue and anxiety.
  • Childs pose is a resting posture that quiets the mind and eases stress. It’s beneficial for the nervous system and lymphatic system

Kickboxing / Boxing
This one is pretty obvious. Sometimes all you feel like doing when you’re stressed is expelling your anger physically. Do this in a safe environment and join a boxing or kickboxing class.

This rigorous workout is a great outlet for stress relief. It will also help to improve your coordination, strength, balance and flexibility. At the end of the class you’re guaranteed to have better mental clarity combined with physical exhaustion. Get a good night’s sleep and start the next day fresh.

Running outside
Let’s face it, most of our stress revolves around our busy lives. Whether it’s work or family commitments, as city slickers the hustle and bustle can sometimes become a bit much. After a long day in the office, sometimes the last thing you feel like doing is going straight into an overpacked gym.

Take any opportunity to get out into some big open space. Whether it’s your nearby beach or park, go for a long run or a walk outside and breath some fresh air.

Leave your electronics behind and focus on enjoying the sounds of the waves crashing or the trees rustling. Beautiful, natural settings can really improve your mood and shake up your workout routine also.

Shower mum with love

I am the luckiest person in the world to have a mum as kind and caring as mine.

My mum is the sort of person that remembers a top you saw three months ago and will sneak out and buy it for your birthday. She’s the kind of person that drops everything to bring you bone broth and vitamin C powder at the slightest mention of a cold.

She’s my person, through the happiest times and the hardest ones. So, its natural that on mother’s day (and really it should be every other day too) that I want to spoil her.
If you’ve got a mum like mine then a material gift or experience is lovely, but it’s the money can’t buy moments that really win her over.

As well as Face Plus Oxygen Glow Facial Voucher, I want to dedicate the whole of Sunday the 13th May to spending quality time with my mum. We’re not the kind of family that goes to a fancy restaurant on national holidays and pays for an overpriced set menu. We prefer to spend it at home, all together, like no time has passed.

Here is a list of cost-effective ways to show your mum just how grateful you are to have her this Mother’s Day

  1. Cook her a delicious brunch

My mum’s ultimate gift is to have someone trade places with her in the kitchen. While she’s a great cook, she just doesn’t enjoy doing it – so taking her place is the ultimate present. Do a beautiful breakfast spread of bakery treats, eggs, bacon, avocado, sautéed mushrooms. Breakfast is an easy option that doesn’t break the bank but really impresses people.

Decorate the table with fresh flowers and an extra bunch at mum’s seat, to win all the brownie points.
Don’t forget to clean the kitchen after. Nothing ruins a relaxing breakfast than mum scrubbing bacon fat of her scanpan.

  1. Make her a photo album of you two

Memories are the most precious present you could gift your mum. Especially now that everything is digital, it’s easy for photos to get lost amongst your Instagram feed.

Take the time to print out some recent photos and dig up some old ones. There is something so lovely about a physical photo as opposed to one on your home screen.
Go the extra mile and frame one of your favourites.

  1. Watch a favourite movie together

We are glorified movie buffs in our family. At Christmas time we have to watch Love Actually and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Pick a movie that is sentimental to your childhood and cosy up after your food coma to watch it all together.

  1. Make mum a homemade body scrub

Rose and Coconut Oil Body Scrub
Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoon organic coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon pure sweet almond oil
  • 7-10 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 handfuls of Fresh rose petals

Process:

  • Put coconut oil, almond oil, sugar, fresh and cleaned rose petals to the blender.
  • Make sure that all the ingredients are blended coarsely and smooth enough so that it can be applied on the skin. You can also add your favourite essential oil for extra benefits.
  • Keep this rose sugar scrub aside for 10 minutes so that the nutrients of sugar and rose can mix up with coconut and almond oils.

Store in an airtight container for 5-7 days

  1. Draw your mum a beautiful bubble bath

Now for this one, you’re obviously going to give your mum a bit of alone time, but run her warm bath, pop some champagne for her to enjoy and gift her a new book. This simple pamper session will have her feeling lovely and relaxed.
Enjoy making memories with your mum this mother’s day.

Autumn blues busters

Autumn brings rebirth!

Don’t you hate that feeling of leaving your office at 5:00pm and its dark outside? It feels like only yesterday we were watching the sun set at 8pm. For most of us 9-5ers, the weather and lack of sunlight after work has a real impact on our mood and metal state.

They call it the autumn blues for a reason.

Here is a list of blues-busting techniques to get you through the cold months.

  1. Wake up earlier and exercise outdoors

I know it sounds ridiculous. How on earth is cutting into my sleep going to make me happier? (jump ahead to number 2 for the answer) waking up earlier and swapping the gym for a run in the park, is a brilliant way to see some sunlight, breathe some fresh, crisp air and also make your day seem a bit longer and more diversified.

Pack on your long tights and your puffer vest and hit the pavement. Only, the other week I woke up at 5:30am to run the bondi to bronte. I was shocked at how busy it was. I ran without overheating, I patted some cute bondi dogs, watched the sunrise over the water and had an overpriced coffee all by 7am. It was one of the nicest mornings I’ve had in a long time.

  1. Go to bed an hour earlier than usual

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing better than coming home, having a hot shower then changing into winter PJ’s and watching Netflix in bed.

To compensate for your productive mornings, have sloth like weekday evenings and hit the hay between 9-10pm.

  1. Learn to cook healthy versions of classic comfort food

Summer is the season of eating out and burning through savings. Just because you’re more of a homebody in the colder months, doesn’t mean you have to form a relationship with your UberEats delivery driver. It’s also not an excuse to ditch the diet.

Buy a slow cooker and learn how to slow cook meat. Trust me, it’s the easiest cooking you’ll ever do and walking into your house after work and smelling dinner, simmering away, is the most comforting feeling in the world.

  1. Plan nights in with friends

Just because you don’t feel like leaving the house, doesn’t mean you have to stop socialising. Invite friends over. Host a pamper night. Watch movies, cook dinner, drink wine, wear face masks. Enjoy your company on the couch instead of some trendy beachside bar.

  1. Use your weekends to explore

If you’re a beach bum, chances are you have a void of time to fill where you’d usually be perched on the sand. Take a weekend off and go on a road trip. Go on a forest hike, visit a vineyard, camp on the sand dunes – do fun, outdoorsy adventures, just wear more clothes than your usual swimsuit.

Acne and Anxiety: how to beat the breakout blues

Acne is awful. There’s no possible way to sugar-coat it.

Whether you’re prone to the odd breakout or suffer what feels like an eternal struggle with aggressive acne, it really is one of the most challenging skin conditions, both mentally and physically.

When we see patients that have suffered from years of acne, the first thing we look at is their mental state. Acne causes serious distress on the mental health of our patients and as dermal therapists it’s our job to assess that damage as seriously as we do the damage on your skin.

The interplay between anxiety and acne is very important to consider as part of your treatment plan. While anxiety alone won’t directly cause acne to develop it certainly plays a part in why it occurs and it plays an even bigger part in the severity of breakouts.

To understand their relationship, we need to first understand what acne and anxiety are.
Acne is bacteria in the skin. It is an inflammation or infection of your sebaceous glands.
Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress.

While you might have developed acne because of a hormonal imbalance (common in teenagers and young adults) and/or because of a poor choice in diet, acne is greatly enhanced by the onset of stress related (anxiety) hormones.

During our skin assessment for all new clients, our dermal therapists will commonly ask, does your bad skin bother you? The answer is almost always YES! How can it not, especially when it is directly on your face. Acne not only looks bad but can also be painful and cause sensitivity to the surrounding skin.

It is hard to disguise with makeup and often can further irritate and spread the bacteria causing a vicious cycle of even more acne and anxiety.

So how do we stop being anxious about our skin?
Step 1. Devise a treatment plan
At Face Plus a typical acne treatment plan involves a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes, meticulous at home skincare and in clinic facials, laser and light therapy.

Once our clients understand that there is a process to ensure progress, they already start to feel more at ease. Anxiety is largely dealing with uncertainty, which a treatment plan hopes to settle.

Step 2. Be Patient
The next step is to learn patience. Just a single pimple can take a while to form on the skin so you need to be realistic with your recovery time. Clients need to remember to take their treatment plan day by day.

It is often helpful to keep a selfie or photo journal to track your progress.

Step 3. Acceptance
Accepting that sometimes it might get worse, before it gets better. This is a hard one to swallow, and I speak from personal experience.

Often after an acne extraction, herbal peel or SGA treatment, the skin is even more inflamed than when you walked in. The skin is a living organ and the treatments are designed to provoke a reaction. While we do offer healing light therapy to calm the skin, don’t expect to walk out of an acne treatment with blemish free skin.

Step 4. Celebrate Milestones
A very important part of the treatment plan is to celebrate the victories, however, small they are. This can mean going a week without the breakout inducing dairy or saturated fat from your diet.

Or saying YAY because you woke up without your usual cyclops pimple on your forehead. Forward is forward and by learning to embrace the wins, you’ll find yourself believing a bit more in the process which in turn will help settle your anxiety.

Step 5. Don’t be too hard on yourself
Acne, is one of the most common skin afflictions. 90% of people suffer from it at one point in time. Whatever you’re going through, take comfort knowing that someone else is fighting the exact same battle.

Make sure to discuss your feelings with family, friends and of course your dermal therapist.

Tea-Tox: Drink to your health

I have made a promise to myself this year to limit my coffee intake to one small cappuccino a day.

I did this because I began to notice the dehydrating effects the caffeine and milk combination was having on my body. After finishing my morning coffee, I always find my mouth is parched.

I’ve been reading a lot lately on science of the body and a big lesson they teach you is the listen to what your body is trying to tell you. If you have a headache for instance, don’t just fix it with a pill, stop and think what could have caused it to occur in the first place.

Dehydration is one of the leading causes for headaches, loss of focus and general irritability.

While we all know we should be drinking 8 glasses of water a day, sometimes it’s easier said than done. Since my coffee restrictions have been in place I’ve been substituting my afternoon cap for a herbal tea.

I’ve noticed that it’s a warming and comforting way to stay hydrated and receive some added antioxidants. I now have a varie-tea (see what I did there) of tea on my desk to compliment whatever mood or craving I’m having.

Here is a brief list of some health benefits associated with a range of popular herbal teas. Make sure you opt for a natural brand with no additives or sugar to really reap the health benefits.

Green Tea

  • Naturally rich in caffeine so a great coffee alternative if you suffer from an afternoon slump
  • High in antioxidants
  • It burns fat, so great if you’re trying to get in shape
  • Prevents tooth decay and assists in bad breath
  • Re-hydrates you better than water

Peppermint Tea

  • Great for digestion, a good one to have after your lunch
  • Helps to alleviate migraines and nausea
  • Relieves stress
  • Fights Asma symptoms (decongestant)

Cinnamon Tea

  • Warms circulation
  • Regulates glucose metabolism
  • Fights viruses
  • Lowers cholesterol

Rooibos Tea

  • Naturally caffeine free
  • Assists to calm skin irritations
  • Contains cancer fighting properties

Ginger Tea

  • Relieves nausea, diarrhea, indigestion and cramping (great for travelling if you suffer from motion sickness)
  • Anti-inflammatory

Chamomile

  • Antibacterial
  • Great for treating sleep and stomach problems

Drinking sugar and dairy free herbal tea is a great way to detox your body and enjoy some immunity benefits at the same time. That sounds beau-tea-ful to me.

The importance of Vitamin D VS. the risks of sun damage

How important is Vitamin D to our health?

In short, it’s very important. Vitamin D spurs bone growth. It is also a vital component to the wellness of your immune system. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it produces Vitamin D.

There is a common perception that in order for your skin to produce vitamin D it needs to be directly exposed to sunlight ie. if you use sunblock, your body won’t reap the benefits.

By contrast, we are also made to believe that ANY exposure (particularly to the harsh Australian sun) will lead to damage of the skins cellular DNA. So is it possible to have a balance of both?

Your body only needs 10-15 minutes on unexposed sun, 3 times a week to produce a sufficient amount of vitamin D.

However, the same 10-15 minutes are also all it takes for your skin cells to produce sunburn and genetic mutations that may lead to skin cancer.

If you wear sunscreen will you body absorb vitamin D?
An SPF 15 blocks out 93% of the UVB rays
an SPF 30 blocks out 97% of the UVB rays
an SPF 50 blocks out 98% of the UVB rays
this leaves anywhere from 2-7% of solar UVB reaching your skin.

Are there other ways to enjoy the benefits of Vitamin D?
Yes, in your diet. Fatty Fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna are incredible sources of Vitamin D.

Daily, you should try and achieve 600 International Units (IU) of Vitamin D a day.
A supplement such as a tablespoon of cod liver is great way to get your boost.

While there are a handful of tablet supplements on the market, it’s important to try and achieve it through your diet and lifestyle first.

If you do love the sun and depend on that method to achieve your vitamin D then make sure you stay out of the sun during the harshest times of the day, between 11am-3pm.

An early morning walk wearing sunscreen and a hat will definitely be beneficial for your health, happiness and Vitamin D levels.
